Due to a forgotten birthday that is on Sunday (and it’s a big one), please could someone recommend a whisky (not peaty) that I can get in a supermarket? Budget up to £50.

You will have my eternal thanks. I know sod all about whisky.

If I was the recipient, a Glenlivet 15 would be most welcome. Usually pretty will stocked. It is often discounted to £40ish but at around £50 for me this is a great option.

Best of luck.

Who is it for and what do they like?

Maybe use a chart like the above as a guide?

If they don’t like peaty, go for the bottom half.

Take the chart to Waitrose, who have a decent selection of Whiskeys (for a supermarket) and buy whatever is on offer?

For my dad. He usually drinks ‘cooking’ whisky. He’s 86 tomorrow, we were meant to go out for a meal but without wanting to go into detail we aren’t.

Dalwhinnie is a great one for those that don't like their whisky to strong and peaty

Aberlour 12 is also a great option at this price point, will find it in most supermarkets and also Majestic if that’s an option locally to you.

Thanks folks, got him the Balvennie (no Waitrose in the grim north, but found some at Sainsburys!)

Which balvenie?
The 12 yo is a nice drop
The Carribean cask is really nice
Portwood is out of your budget but exceptional
