I'm looking for a recommendation on a decent Primitivo at around £10 a bottle - preferably Manduria and around 14.5%. Looking to buy a case to replenish the rack. No issues with a supermarket wine.

I'm down to my last bottle of this - quite nice but come to the conclusion it's not quite worth the price

This is for a day to day decent glugger to go with Pizza and Bolognaise, ..I need to protect my Amarone supplies smile

I really like this

If you are willing to spend a little more I’ve found this online for £16 a bottle a few times. Probably my favourite.

Two robust Italian reds from co-op that are negroamaro, and pair well with hearty dishes:

Although this chianti is extremely versatile and gluggable:

I think primitivo is one of those wines where you need to taste. There's a lot of diversity in styles

From being a pretty rustic but characterful wine, many growers have now gone down the international nondescript jammy wine style route. It's eminently suitable for this style due to the grape characteristics and climate in Puglia.

On top of that a lot of the producers are introducing appassimento (Amarone) techniques which push the sugar, alcohol and concentration even further. These will be prized by people who like that style but not to everyone's taste.

For me, the reference point for Zinfandel/Primitivo are Ridge wines from California. These are field blends of 70ish % Zin and other oddities. They are pricey now but worth it to see what the grape is really capable of. They are immensely powerful but deliver this with complexity and finesse.
