This used to be a thing but seems to have disappeared bar some Lidl alpenfest rosti style knockoffs that are crap.

Haven't seen in years.

cardboard sleeve box with a foil pouch and inside, long life, scallops of potato and bacon chunks and onion I think. Anyone have any alternates?

Back as kid Sainsbury's I think did 3 versions the aforementioned one with chunks of potato bacon and some sort of scrambled cubes, way nicer than I describe, and a sausage (albeit more frankfurter/bockwurst style) discs with potato cubes. Utter heaven these were. But in more recent times only the first type was availble.

Some have suggested camping style packs offer similar but I've looked and not found anything comparable.

Any suggestions for similar product

Was it Sainsburys Bacon Brunch? Not seen it for a while. You can slice potatoes, add onions, bacon lardons and egg to a pan for something...exactly the same smile

German potato salad chucked in a frying pan is close as well.

If you fancy a quick “fix”, Toby Carvery do a buffet breakfast with a dish just as you describe. I came across it by chance a while back whilst away, then had to seek it out again once I got home lick

Sounds like the sort of thing that was coated in lard and salt for deliciousness.
Jamie Oliver and his traffic light healthy eating packaging will have killed this off around the time of the turkey twizzler.

It does sound like something that a facsimile of could be knocked up quickly at home. Subway do something vaguely like it, but insist on putting it in one of their disgusting not-bread products which rather spoils the effect.

Sounds a bit like a rosti to me. I'm sure I have seen something like that in Lidl or Aldi. You might need to add your own extras though.

I absolutely loved those, to the point where I’ve desperately tried to find an alternative. M&S did similar. The camping equivalent is ridiculously expensive, this stuff was dirt cheap and all the better for it.

I also loved breaded cheese and ‘bacon/spam’ grills, which have also disappeared.

You've just inadvertently solved something that was confusing me last night.

I was going through my notes on my phone and one note just said "Pfanni".

When I read your post everything clicked, it is the German make of just what you describe that can be bought, or at least used to be, in Home Bargains biggrin

I obviously made a note back in February 2023 to remind me what to look for... until I forgot what the note referred to!

Several places online sell it if you Google.

I'm a fan of the Lidl Alpine week specials and have 4 in my cupboard right now. The "Berner style" ones with bacon are tastier but the plain ones are good too.

I do remember what you're harking back to though - tasty!

This sounds like something we've bought in the past from b and m or bargain madness type places

Could also try the 'international ' aisle in bigger Tesco

If I get chance I'll bob in and see if I can see any
