General Price of Steak
Discussion
I have been buying steak weekly across the whole range of supermarkets since I can remember. In fact not so long ago you could equate the cost of certain steak meals to chicken. Things seem to have changed drastically all of a sudden however and I am now considering not bothering to buy it anywhere near as much (normally at least once a week we have a family steak dinner).
It all started with the Morrisons 2 for £6.50, then £7.50 and latterly £8 deal. Two packs for the quoted price, permanent offer. Each pack had 2 steaks, so that meant for the prices above you got enough meat to feed 4 of you. (4 steaks). I would always go for Bavette, Denver or Flat Iron as these were the cuts on this offer. I also would see prices of single packs around the £3.50 - £5 mark in Aldi, Lidl, sometimes Asda and others. That would be generally a rump or Bavette / Denver equivalent. Generally, with a bit of shopping about, you were picking up 4 steaks odd for around the £10 - 12 mark.
Literally over the last few weeks, all these cuts have been pulled from the shelves, the deals stopped, and the prices of existing packs increased substantially. I have seen the Flat Iron and Bavette are now unpurchasable, and the Denver labelled cut which is only ever in Morrisons is permanently out of stock. The Rump, Sirloin or even Ribeye cuts are available, but at huge prices. Rumps now seem to start at £5 and for the thicker cuts it was £8. These were scraggy looking cuts too, "Birchwood Farms" for those that know. Some were just lumps of gristle. Twin packs of Sirloin / Ribeye were £12 upwards. You get the gist.
I know prices are up and this is all old news, but something specific seems to have happened abruptly with steak. Why are all these cuts now unavailable - where are they going? And where are people now going to buy steak at a price where there is some form of value no matter how small? I bought some of the rump yesterday and it cost me over £20 to get enough for 4 of us, only just enough. And some of it was inedible.

If you live near any wholesale food outlets or a Chinese supermarket you can buy a lump of sirloin or fillet for a reasonable price much cheaper than supermarkets, i just cut it into steaks and freeze it. I also enjoy a braising steak which some of the high street stuff is only fit for.

We eat a lot of ribeye, it's noticeably more expensive than it was.
After much scoffing I've found the Sainsburys Taste The Diffference ones for £10.25 are best of those I've tried in the supermarket.
A good butcher is better still but I'm paying £25-£30 for about 600g of ribeye.
I tried Waitrose organic, cannot remember which cut, and they were fantastic,17/ 18 quid a pop though, my then girlfriend loved them, the latest one will only eat Lamb lol, or chicken, 20 quid a kilo for chops in the butchers this morning. 10 quid a kilo for his sausages so it does not sound so bad lol. I love pork as someone else mentioned, must be a women thing, the ones I meet will not touch it.
Picked up one of these the other day from Sainsbury's, probably the nicest supermarket steak I have tried. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsb...

Thick cut Sainsbury’s ribeye is def a good option. But the price for that has certainly gone up. After much scoffing I've found the Sainsburys Taste The Diffference ones for £10.25 are best of those I've tried in the supermarket.

My Sainsbury’s doesn’t seem to have that range with the butter etc.

Feed prices have rocketed, and it's only going to get worse with a poor grain harvest this year.
I buy my beef from a local farm shop and pay £15/Kg for flat iron, £25/Kg for ribeye.

Mrs UTH also a no for pork…..I wonder what it is that women don’t like about it I love pork as someone else mentioned, must be a women thing, the ones I meet will not touch it.
Pork: I recall from college days the mention of "boar taint" which was more detectable by the female human than male and gave the meat an odd taste so I wonder if it stems from this.
Of course not ALL pork will suffer this but once someone's made their mind up!

Rolled Pork Shoulder, cheap but bloody good.

They did have a promo the other week for Gloucester Old Spot Pork:
1x Diced Pork (500g)
1x Pork Mince (500g)
1x Pork Belly Slices (500g)
4x Pork Chops (300g)
1x Pork Leg Deboned (1.5kg)
1x Pork Shoulder- Deboned (1.5kg)
4x Pork Leg Steaks (250g)
All that for £35! Unsurprisingly they sold out in under 24 hours. When I picked up our box I think they said they sold something like 80-odd boxes.
