Help me settle an argument... apparently I am in a small minority.

I like to eat soup with toast. I just find it nicer, holds its structure better and has more flavour.

To me bread is just a waste of time, turns to goop and is bland.

Given the choice you have a hot bowl of soup and a slice of toast or slice of bread (both buttered, we are not savages) then which are you going for?

For clarity, as I know the pedants will be along.. they are both white bread from the same loaf and thats your only choice.

Bread. It's just easier. Put the breadloaf, butter and the butterknife on the table and you can have as many as you like. With toast you have to either cook as many as you think you are going to need when you start, or keep getting up to make more toast, and wait for it to cook while your soup goes cold.

Crusty bread with butter IS the answer.

But if the OP is saying a regular warburtuns white sliced loaf of bread, then I'd prefer it toasted.

A crisp Scottish morning roll, well-fired optional. Butter thick enough to leave teeth marks.

Some absolute freaks in this thread.

Bread. Some butter. If it's good enough for Michelin starred restaurants, it's good enough for me.

depends on the bread

a crusty artisan sour dough loaf with butter wins every time

if its a generic white sliced loaf then toast

I am saying some sort of white sliced bread... you can have it toasted or just plain...

Also pita... wholemeal... with soup? Seek help, for the rest of the human race please I beg you!

Given your specific question and opening post, toast makes the most sense as per your reason.

A couple of crusty rolls, with a thick layer of butter.

If we don't have any in the house then I'll go out and buy some rather than have bread or toast smile

What soup is it?

Toast is better for dipping. Bread is better for mopping up afterwards.

For most soups, unbuttered bread, however Heinz Tomato Soup must be eaten with a cheese toastie.
