The Home Brewing Thread
Discussion
I've been a keen all grain home brewer for around 7 years now and thought it might be an idea to start a thread where ideas/recipes can be shared as I'm sure there must be a few on here.
My last brew had great promise but, whilst very drinkable, was slightly tainted by an astringent off flavour - the mash got stuck and I had to agitate it quite a bit which I think may have released excess tannins. I did another brew at the weekend an thought I'd keep it simple and do a single hop IPA with Mozaic, Maris Otter base malt and some wheat malt - it's burping away at the moment and going great.
I usually default to Mangrove Jack Liberty Bell yeast which seems to give consistent results. I've always dry hopped but now I'm thinking that this does not seem to give much back for the effort and expense involved. On the latest brew I reduced the bittering hop and added no additions during the boil, instead adding a big hop addition for the hops standing and running the whirpool for 2 hours - I'm hoping to improve hop flavour/intesnsity but will see how this experiment works out.
I'd be interested to hear others experiences in terms of what are your brewing and whether dry hopping is worth it, also any comments on yeasts as I'd not apprecated the effect this can have on flavour.
Open forum - so, what you doing?
