Onion chives

Much to my surprise, had the same effect as the icon.

On Saturday I was cutting some quantities up finely for freezing before the outside cold kills them and found my eyes watering, as happens with onions.
while they obviously have the onion taste, I really wasn't expecting the same crying effect.

any ideas why??
