I'm sure I heard somewhere that you shouldn't eat potatoes if they're sprouting roots. Is it actually true or can I just pick them off and cook them anyway???!!

Cut 'em off and cook them well. You will be fine. But do not eat any green parts of the potato.

Apparently keeping an apple in the same bag as the spuds stops them doing it - no idea if there's any truth in that mind.

They're poisonous and you'll die if you eat them.

yes

I know of a whole family in Cornwall who were wiped out by sprouting potatoes. Tragic.

That's taking it too far.

The solanine concentrate in green crisps is about 75%. In sprouting potatoes its roughly 40%, so at least you stand a small chance of survival.

She really did have a cavalier attitude to the shelf life of potato based products and no mistake.

I see these SAD cases all the time (Starch Addiction Disorder). Not much you can do, except maybe try to seduce them whilst they still have some breath left. paperbag

Potatoes generate glycoalkaloids (principally solanine) as a pesticide, sprouting or green potatoes have a higher solanine content than your average potato. Bruised/damaged potatoes will also have a much higher content. The safest thing to do is to throw them away (my advice), next best thing is to peel them (deeply) as most of the solanine is in the skin and the outer cortex.

I did a study for MAFF on this some years back. Given normal consumption habits it is quite difficult to poison yourself with a potato and the major risk is from potato skins with salt/spices so you can't taste the bitter glycoalkaloid. I can tell you from experience it is possible, including puking blood, so as I said, throw them away.

Well that's all rather worrying. I've been eating our own grown tiddies / taters / spuds for years. We just snap off the sprouts, peel (admittedly I peel every bit of skin off - hate the stuff) and boil away. Still have the last from 2007 in a wicker basket awaiting cooking.

Never eat the green bits though.
