John Smiths, when drunk in North Yorkshire not far from the brewery, it doesn't seem to travel that well.

When I were a Somerset lad (yokel accent), Courage Director's used to be the one and Wadsworths XXX, but now we are in Lancs the best by far is Landlord. Proper Ale does not travel. Pubs that go on about the "quality beer" and then have guest Ales from coming in from a distance realy boils my p1ss.

Timmy Taylors Landlord and Ol' Speckler are both very nice brews, but out of those 2 it'd have to be Landlord for me though please, usually a nice robust beer with decent hop character, usually easily quaffed!
Fullers ESB, Potton Shannon and Adnams Bitter are my faves at the moment though, well kept they're nigh on unbeatable IMO! drink

OP, be sure to check out the Real Ale thread in here for everything Ale related!

Landlord, especially since (I've noticed) that Old Heckled Spen has had it's volts reduced from 5+ to 4.4% ABV furious

Well, that's my favourite of the two listed by the OP, anyway.

Favourite all time real ale?

Mauldon's Blackadder was sensational (not sure if it's brewed any more though?).

Out of those two? Timothy Taylor Landlord, undoubtably.

Old Speckled Hen is of the Greene King stable. Not one of my favourite tipples, TBH.

Gales HSB used to be top of the list (Tim Taylor out of the two suggested) but since the Fullers buy out it's not quite the same.
The Cheriton Brewery is only a couple of miles from my house and their 'Pots' ale is excellant

You`re not kidding! Shocking beer that shouldn`t be let out from the brewery.

especially not when they started brewing it in warrington rather than tadcaster, there was a minor revolt amongst drinkers and pubs with many stopping selling it. I believe it has now returned to tadcaster.

timothy taylors golden best for me anyway

Also love Innis & Gunn, Badger Brewery stuff (try the Stinger), Wells' Brewery stuff, Shepherd Neame too.

Actually, not sure what ales I REALLy don't like.
