What are the best kinds?

The juicier the better. Jack Links is easily available and real juicy but it feels a little too processed. I've imported stuff from Brazil and Eastern Europe but my favourite is the stuff in the larger Sainsburys stores - can't remember the name though.

Beef jerky is the ultimate road trip food. Steak in a bag - what's not to like?

the best in the UK comes from a saffer bilton-maker in Sheen...he has this little sausage and biltong shop in the middle of a housing estate.

dry, spicy, and lasts for ages while burning your lips. perfect biltong smile

Is there a reason why it's so expensive? Or is it available cheaply somewhere (only seen it in supermarkets)

I'd love to snack on the stuff as it tastes nice and has a good amount of protein..

Cheers, Greg.

Jerky tends to be sweet and juicer.

Biltong is spicy (read: zingy)and drier. Not too spicy mind as it seasoned with pepper.

WARNING! Do NOT open the bag of silica gel and sprinkle onto Biltu/Jerky mistakenly thinking that it is seasoning, it does not taste good nono

The waitrose stuff is ok but well below what you can get.
however if you like the waitrose stuff look on the pack as you can buy direct from their supplies at a fraction of the cost wink

If you want the real stuff then "Blue Rock" in Bisley is brilliant.
They make it there and its as good as you are going to get anywhere

Jerky is a poor alternative to Biltong. Lived in S.A. for a year and became addicted. Just so happens there is an excellent little South african shop about 15 minutes away from me smile Prices for Biltong in the UK are a little steep to say the least though.

If it's jerky your after, Sainsburys sell a lovely selection (Rocking JR or something).

Good grief. Beef Jerky is bloody awful. Tastes like the scrapings from the bottom of a barbecue grill hurl

Each to their own though...

This is the stuff: Suzman's hot piri piri biltong

You can buy it at Harrod's, however if you order online from the manufacturer you can choose exactly the degree of dryness and / or fattiness you want. Bone dry with no fat for me. yes
