Chips in batter

Saw frozen chips in batter (Mccain, I think) in the supermarket, not something I've seen before.

Sounds rather unpleasant. Are these some sort of regional delicacy like deep fried crunchies? Do they taste as bad as they sound?

All frozen oven chips/ roast spuds / parsnips etc have a light batter to create the right texture/taste etc.

If you mean their Beer Battered Chips, then you made a big mistake not picking them up......

They are hard to find, but seem to be making it into more Supermarkets, great with a nice chunky steak.

I was sceptical but tried some and really rather good.

Prefer making wedges at home generally, but just once in a while fancy oven chips.

Mmmm, chips in batter, not as pikey as you might think !

A family tradition (from the Yorkshire branch) is that of collops, deep friend potato discs in batter. They go really really well with cold meats. And boxing day turkey and collops is great.

And it isn't that much of a step to tempura potato. I did last Christmas' collops in tempura batter, which worked very well.

..I like potatoe scallops/fritters, lovely cheap addition to a chip shop visit.

Nope, I meant what I wrote ! Although no doubt collop is a contraction of scalloped. It is a real word !

Scollop = "A small portion of food or a slice, especially of meat" It's from the French escalope.

My Gran used to make them She called them scallops in batter. I prefer scallops (without batter) to chips anyday.

the jury is out on these, just had some and even though I have eaten them, not sure chips should taste of beer

guess I should have some more at some stage just to make sure.

I tried some. Not very nice, dry and floury and tasted of chemicals rather than food (but I think most frozen chips taste similar). Worth the try, though

I didn't find them dry or floury, just not sure that chips tasting of beer is quite right.
