I really like the old Glenmorangie, in most incarnations.

To me, this Laph tastes very much like cough mixture, no wonder my old man 'donated' it.

Bad in the universal sense of the word like having undesirable or negative qualities?

I don't drink much at all.

Oh OK ... thought you meant "bad" as in "good" biglaugh

Perhaps whisky is an aquired taste then?

Not sure about the terms of the thread, but I was granted a semi-eponymous single malt.

BruichLaddich Drambuster, from Cask No. 473, Year 1990.

The Drambusters were..are...the distillery's tame aerobatic flying circus. I was Drambuster Three in 2006.

I've just checked my last bottle of the 2006 Drambuster. It's still empty. Dammit.

Oooh man I LOVE Laphroaig, the peaty taste is super, its not an easy or starter scotch nor one to swill glass after glass like a lowland/speyside.

Cant stand Glenfidich ew...

I think it is far too peaty. My brother in law either got some as a present, or got some given to him because his mate didn't like it. It was like downing the contents of a hanging basket.

Glenmorangie is ok but nothing special. Dalwhinnie is a good one to try if you like Glenmorangie and can't get on with the old chap malts.

If im out drinking, and not on the pints, i will usually have a Grouse and Canada Dry - refuse to put mixers in the good stuff for obvious reasons - but if i leave my bottle anywhere the younger bro can see it, it will be in a pint glass topped up with coke in no time.

I am guessing then that in general you are more of a Lowlands / Speyside tippler?

Would suggest that if the taste of the laphroag does not hit your buttons, to avoit Islays or Irish whisky in general and stick to teh mainland ones biggrin

Personally i think the Islay's are the best!

Speyside... yes.

Not really knowledgeable on the subject, its more of a 'know what i like' sort of affair.

All whiskies are good, some are just better than others biggrin

It is a matter of taste, I like Laphroaig, I wouldn't have a night drinking it but a couple is just fine, I also like most of the Islay malts, they are all peaty, some more than others.

My default whisky is MacCallan, I always have a bottle of that in the house, Highland Park is another I usually have around, both are middle of the road kind of malts.

There is no such thing as a bad Malt Whisky !!!

You are trying Laphroaig cask strength at 48 abv , definitely an acquired taste , to develop the flavour of cask strength whiskies you need to add a drop of water , Having said that
Is a completely different taste far more subtle and complex.

Malt Whiskies can be divided into different categories each having a unique taste : example a low land Malt will taste different from a Speyside or an island Malt you have to experiment find the taste that suits you .

For me generally I much prefer a good 30 year old malt ,

really enjoy Talisker 18 year old is a very good buy ( best single malt in 2007 )

or Talisker 1981 abv 62 add a drop of water "" Will make your bks tingle ""

However if you dont like Laphroaig you probably wont like Talisker

So try Glenkinchie 20 year old

or some Speyside Malts
A Glenfiddich 30 year old

or Glenfarclas 30 year old

think yourself lucky , all we have out here is

Vodka !!
