Just out of interest to see who you rate.

For me it has to be Rick Stein - Good food, down to earth, not up his own ass like some I could mention.

Also Floyd just because he is a genius!!!

Gotta be Anthony Worral Thompson, for me!

ETA- "Joke!"

I think Floyd is the best TV chef- who else has been drunk as a skunk on a boat off South Africa, doing his own camera work while the producer leans over the side? But, in truth, I've no idea what his food tastes like. Marco P.W. and Raymond Blanc if I was just judging the food, I'd guess, but there are a few others on my list to try...

Gordon Ramsay for me - he can be annoying at times for sure - but at the end of the day he is passionate about what he does and is rather good at it.

Now don't get me started on Jamie Oliver.......

Ramsey for me too. Keith Floyd is a legend, of course, and actually some of AWTs recipes are really rather pleasant. Would love to try one of Hesston's creations, but they are too elaborate to contemplate trying at home.

Mrs M & I were just having a similar conversation.

Neither of us knew, exactly, where MPW was coming from before watching his "Great British Feast" but it's clear that he is passionate about food. That's a good thing. However, he does have a whiff of Michelin Star (as demonstrated by his Michelin Stars) and - for us - that doesn't make us want to visit his eaterie. We have dined at a 1 M-star restaurant, and it was very good, exceptionally cooked, and very poncey.

Rick Stein is also passionate about food, but doesn't have that "chasing the Michelin Star" attitude and I would much rather dine at his restaurant than any other "celeb" chef's.

If Gino d' Acampo has a restaurant, I'd happily reserve a seat there!

Probably doesn't really fit into the "chef" category, but I would go with Hugh F-W.

I'm also a fan of Caudia Roden (amazing knowledge of middle-eastern food) and Dan Lepard (very, very talented baker).

Ramsey's pursuit of excellence is admirable. I've been to Hospital Road a few times and despite looking very closely - just can't fault it (and that's despite the costs!) Fearnley Whittingstall also cares about food but occasionally OTT. Worral Thomson and the sainsubury's boy way too superficial for my liking - too busy selling dubious kitchen appliances. IMHO

For cooking at home, Delia rarely gets it wrong, though I don't think I'd call her a chef. I use quite a few Jamie recipes, and my sister says that Ramsay's most recent book is brilliant and all the recipes work.

floyd for the obvious reasons.

ken hom. if you ignore the 10-a-penny daytime slots he comes up with some very traditional but very achieveable dishes.

the roux brothers. when i was a kid i was utterly transfixed at the things they'd create before wrestling came on on bbc2!

nigella for her norks.

ramsey's ok but not that impressive if you think about it. its top gear for food. oliver gets a lot of stick but if you leave aside the personality him and ramsey are 2 sides of the same coin.

The man should be shot for crimes against good taste and decency.

Joining him in the culinary Room 101 are:
Ainsley Harriot
Gary Rhodes
and the part of Delia Smith that decided tinned mince and frozen mash potato were a good idea.

Keith Floyd for me. He seems to just chuck it together pretty much anywhere, cooking over a zippo lighter (other lighters may be used!) and I'll bet it still tastes fantastic.

I agree with all the suggestions so far, all great cooks and in their own ways impress me greatly, but for home cooking that's simple but slightly more interesting than Delia's I have to confess I'm a fan of Ainsley Harriot!

The food is simple, but not too simple, tasty, a huge variety and yes, he's a bit of a charmer.......

HFW (with the "is he a chef or not" caveat) is my favourite tv chef simply for the Good Life style, Heston's great for bonkers over the top genius, Ramsey's very watchable if a bit annoying, Stein's great comfort viewing, Oliver's too annoying for words but his food is pretty good and the rest I can take or leave.

Special mention though for Delia Smith for being dull as ditchwater and Rhodes for the most irritating whine on TV today.

Uh what? Not that impressive? 3 michelin stars are pretty impressive if you ask me.

For my (TV Chef) list i'd say;

1: Floyd
2: Rick Stein
3: Gordon Ramsey
4: Nigel Slater
5: Heston Blumenthal - genius, absolute genius but you've got next to no chance of recreating his food.
6: Hairy Bikers
