Well last night went to Waitrose, and picked up a bottle of Dr Loosen Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 2007 £11.00+. Absolutely gorgeous (quaffable). Maybe only 7.5%, but it was perhaps the most fruity wine I have ever tasted. Normally spenf around a fiver but Dr Loosen was recommended to me. Worried it might be too sweet for me, nope just really really fruity. Will try and find some cheaper alternatives for the next one.

Prefer dryish wines, but might try slightly fruitier wines, if thats possible. Yes I do drink red too, but at the moment prefer chilled drinks with my food.

If you liked that, you may really enjoy Gewürztraminer. I had it with sushi and I usually like very dry whites but this was simply amazing! If you go to the Waitrose wine website it will come up as a grape variety in their drop down menu. As they describe, it has a hint of lychees, but I didn't find it sweet, just very well balanced and quaffable! It's not German, I think the bottle I had was from France.

Viognier is also really nice, you may have to try different brands. The best i have had are from Australia, but obviously tastes vary. Description courtesy of Waitrose: "This wine shows exotic and musky apricot fruit with a mouth filling richness and creamy weight threaded with a limey freshness." which is a pretty good description smile

And I think I will be off to grab a bottle of the one you have described beer

Thanks for the recommendation FLG smile. Was it one of these you had? Do you think they will mostly taste the same?

Yep, those are the ones! With both the Gewürztraminer and viognier I tried them first in restaurants then found them in the shops. I don't know if all brands taste the same, I assume there will be differences depending on the country where the grapes are grown, so all you can do is try (hard job eh! smile ) I'd say a good first taste would be the Gewürztraminer from Alsace and the viognier from Australia. I'm sure being Waitrose they will have good examples of each.

We should reconvene next week and compare notes, I will be getting OH to pick up a bottle of the reisling you mentioned thumbup

Also, safer bets but worth trying, if you haven't already:

Wolfblass Chardonnay (yellow label) - I used to hate chardonnay till I tried this.
Lindemans - even though quite a 'mainstream' brand they always seem to do nice, easy-drinking wine (currently on a bottle of the Cawarra colombard chardonnay, not amazing but very pleasant £5 bottle wine)
And of course if you're splashing out a bit a good sancerre or chablis is hard to beat!

Let me know how you get on if you do try those wines. I know it's very objective but I was pleasantly surprised by the first two.

At the other end of the fruit spectrum (ish) Loire white wines have kiwi fruit, with a flinty dryness that is lovely. Pouilly-Fume and some Sancerre fit the bill. Waitrose has good examples of both.

A good Alsatian Gewurztraminer is utter nectar; sweet and slightly sharp.

Another fave is Wolf Blass Chardonnay. Not "Eaglehawk", or "Yellow Label" just Wolf Blass Chardonnay.

Both are great with spicy food. Interestingly (for me) they're probably the only two white wines that I can't drink unless I'm having suitable food. If you like those two wines, I wonder if you would also like Montepulciano, which is a red wine I can't quaff, I think it tastes of honey unless it is with food.

Yalumba viognier I find very quaffable, (currently half way through one), and due to Majestic's recent offer I have several more left. You usually can't go wrong with Sancerre, although since its become popular I've found some truly awful Pinot Grigios which is a shame..

Never been a fan of Chardonnay, its too oaky/buttery for me. Good with a meal though.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape (White)
Top class wine fruity and potent made with young red and white grape, around 300-400 thousand bottles per year so expect to pay £11-15 per bottle.
Been my favorite for years....

Very lucky to have a good friend who owns a vinyard in Chablis, and his wine is very good. Especially that it only costs 7 euros from him, however I saw it the other day for £18.99 in England.

Heading over to our house in France on Weds night, so I will be quaffing 4 Euro bottles of Tourraine Sauvignon Blanc. Not quite Sancerre, but at half the price (in France!), it's an every day bottle.

Sancerre is left for every night wink

+1 Vidal Marlborough is one of my favourites. Preferred the 06 bottle to the 07 one.

We should!!!
IMHO, Oyster bay has reached an artificial high and is now trading a little on its name. There are better Sauvignons out there
