This is the crappest bread out. If you don't eat the whole loaf within 6 hours it surrenders its freshness to the elements, after 24 hours its like a brick.

Why don't they make it to last?.

Because French bakers bake batches every 2 hours and the French buy them and eat them straight away.

Only on PistonHeads could we have a thread entitled "French Bread" with an angry face next to it.

The only preservative bread should have is a bread bin.

Well I don't have one of those I have Tescos and I aint going there every day.

I quite like the bread as well if only they would put some additives into it to make it last.

Those weasely French have got it in for you. hehe

It wasn't legal to make it here for quite a time for that very reason! Some ancient English law about fat content to make the bread last longer, so supermarkets had to import the dough. I presume the EU has changed all that.

Great stuff when it's fresh, though, and the part baked stuff does keep well. thumbup

Brilliant. Ruin a delicious traditional food with chemicals because you\'re lazy.

But then it wouldn't be French Bread?? More like Tesco's take on French Bread, but not as good?

Anyway why is it called French Bread - Shouldn't it be Belgian? Like the fries? Or did I dream that

Oh and a tip, if the stick is soft or like a brick hold it under the tap and wet it than put it in a hot oven for 10 minutes and voila a fresh loaf.

But then they'd have to rename it "English bread that looks like a baguette but isn't". And that takes up too much space on the labelsilly

It is nice though, probably not good for the heart with the amount of butter you have/want to slap on it mind

for following day freshness just pop it in the oven for a few minutes before you eat it.

Or make better use of stale bit - cut in half (lengthways), slap a bit of passatta on it and your favoured choice of pizza like topping, under the grill for 10 minutes. Lovely.

1. Cut sticks into 12" lengths.Freeze in freezer.

2. Maintain 1 piece at all times in freezer bag in fridge

3. Remove from fridge as needed and "freshen" in oven for a few minutes

Have you tried Tiger Bread, absolutely scrummy and it lasts more than a couple of days, well it would do if I didn't eat it so quickly. It comes in uncut loaves, baguettes and sticks.
