How rustic are you feeling?

Fearnley Whittingstall does Woodcock on Toast which is glorious but its not for the squeamish...

Other than that, treat it like pigeon. Its a lovely lovely eating bird.

Don't forget the pin feathers!

go on, how bad is it?

I'm cleaning them out tomorrow as I'm not going to let them get too gamey (or give them chance to get maggots)

is there any particular feathers to pick?

Whole, head the lot, on toast, essentially. I'll try to find it.

One small feather on each wing, slightly different to the others, long and thing, leading edge, cant remember if its on the joint or the tip.

Keep them, stick 'em on your hat. It's good luck.

Left/Right Woodcock is the traditional shooters dream.

To get one is bloody good going.

Hmmmm... think I'll give it a miss

yeah, was a nice long shoot too biggrin

he mentioned that, apparently if you have it witnessed on a shoot you win a supply of booze from one of the shooting associations

can see why, they lifted in seconds and zig-zagged all over the place - no chance I'd bag a brace with a left and right (or top and bottom for the peasants like me biggrin)

Fly at head height, always in a direct line to the bugger on the next stand, its almost like they know.

Bottle of scotch for the woodcock, bottle of scotch for everyone else if you get a white pheasant.

Just remembered the last time I had Partridge, twas at the Star of India on Gloucester Road.

Stuffed with curried turkey mince and a quails egg, served on a bed of saffron rice.

Utterly glorious, if you can be arsed.

What else did you get?

Sounds like a raised game pie could be in the offing, just get a good bit of venison from the butcher.
