For us less practised types choosing a wine can be somewhat of a lucky dip.

So for future references which wines yum and which ones yuck

I had a very quiet Christmas (fretting over a very poorly mutt) but
was very happy with a Louis Chavy 2005 Rully (for the cheese and biscuits)
Would feel happy recommending it. About £10 a bottle?

Any body else with purchases they would recommend?

two south africans for me:

Saronsberg Shiraz 2003 - was really, really good with roast lamb (we went to a friend's for Christmas so had another roast dinner on the 26th)

Hazendal Straw Wine "the last straw" 2005 - sweet pudding wine. perfect.

For white NZ Sav Blanc - Jackson Estate is £10 a bottle in Waitrose right now.

Red South African - Pinotage from Morrison Vineyard (Franshoek) - Again about a £10 if you can find it.

Miss frown

Went for a Pinot Noir Grand Cru and it turned out to be a big miss, it did absolutley nothing for me, I wish I had gone for a St Emillion in the end.

We had a 2007 Moulin-A-Vent Beaujolais with Goose which was lovely. The Monbazillac we had with the Christmas Pudding was nice also, however the star of the day was the 2007 Le Montarlet Sancerre we had with the starter. Truly delightful! thumbup

A magnum of Champagne, bought from a local Champagne grower / producer at the cellar door, followed by a just as great 1999 magnum of St Emillion, again bought in France.

Stoneleigh Pinot Noir - £10.99 in Threshers. Rather nice indeed... biggrin

...and then when we visited my folks my Dad had a couple of bottles of Tall Gum Shiraz Reserve, which was almost as good.
