Hi all, next week I'm off to Manchester and could do with having some idea of where is really nice to eat. I've never been so would appreciate someone in the know giving me some ideas.

Done a quick google and some places come up on Deansgate... is this a nice area? Normal/English food (i.e. not curry or Chinese), but also not 'pubby'. I'm not hugely wealthy right now, but not a complete miser either (IMO). Up to ~£60 for 2 is fine, above £70 and it's likely I'll take a sharp intake of breath as I hand over my card. What will that buy me up there?

You've lots of choice so make a good one. Grado is good, as is El Rincon De Rafa. See this link for good advice.

El Rincon is always good on Deansgate.

Up in the NQ is a place called The Cedar Tree - top grub. Used to go regulary before I shifted to London.

Thanks for all the replies. Stock looks great in a few pictures I found. Is 'The Living Room' any good? I haven't read a bad word about it, but looks like it might be straying towards being a bit pretentious? Also it's near a station; is it a grotty area?

It's near Piccadilly, on Deansgate and is probably one of the busiest and best areas in Manchester for eating/drinking. As for Living Room, yes, it is nice, food is reasonable but it can be crowded and a bit pretentious.

Try this for something a bit different. It's Portuguese. http://www.lusorestaurant.co.uk/

Try Dimitris which is at the start of deansgate, opposite the massive Hilton hotel. Fantastic food, great price and casual atmosphere, i've been there about 15 times in the last 2 years, never a bad experience, price is reasonable as well. Its next to Deansgate train station but which ever station you get off at in Manchester will cost you no more than a couple of quid in a taxi, Hope that helps.

That's where they filmed Coronoronoronation Street when Lianne 'I'm a Hooker' Battersby had her restaurant.

Went to Stock on Friday, and yes it's really nice. Don't know if they have someone singing every night, but there was a guy singing jazz who was really good and added to the whole thing. Certainly did the trick anyway wink, just what I wanted.
