I'm looking for somewhere to take Mrs HH in London (Central/North would be best) for a celebration. Just the two of us, and looking for somehwere special to combine good food with a fun/different atmosphere. We eat anything.

We're lucky enough to have eaten in most of the AA Gill haunts like M-PWs places, GRs places, Ivy, Nobu, J Sheekey, etc as I often entertain clients rolleyes I'm not looking for overly stuffy/posh/formal - just somewhere for a special and memorable evening.

Thoughts?

Many thanks for the suggestion, but no more GR places - clients love those places because of the (his) name, so I shy away in my private life!

...and I beleive it's in a hotel - or is that the original Maze? It escapes me...eating in a restuarant in a hotel always feels a little strange/odd to me if I'm not staying there..

I would recomend Lemonia, in Primrose Hill. Good food, great service, and not too expensive.

Sketch is one of my favourites.
Hakkasan was also very good although I haven't been since it was taken over.

Once more, Hunan. Nothing special to look at but the food makes up for it.

Fair points. I haven't been since, but from what I've heard, Hakassan has taken somewhat of a plunge since it's takeover. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I went, however. What about Benares? Contemporary Indian? Failing that, just take her to a Corney and get lashed with miserable suits.

Mate, have a look at Vanilla. They do tasting menu's only and it really is a bit of an experience.

Bel Canto for a touch of opera with your meal. Basically, everyone is a top class opera singer and they just start singing whilst you're having your meal. Good fun and decent food.

Nancy Lam's Enak Enak
'Celeb' chef's place. Superb food, really nice atmosphere.

Also, just got back from Goodman's Steakhouse. Evening Standard recently claimed that they do the best steak in London, and i've got to agree.

Portal on St. John's Street near Farringdon. Contemporary Portuguese style food with a nice atmosphere. Great wine list too. You coudl pop to my favourite pub too - Fox and Anchor on Charterhouse Street, for a pint of the very tasty Old Growler and a plate of traditional pork scratchings. Perfect.

20 yards from my office front door - often eat there for lunch - lovely!

Some great suggestions there, much appreciated people!

I also have an appetite for Etheopian food but don't know of any that aren't a little basic - any thoughts on that?
