Well, I know there are some coffee connoisseurs on here so I thought it should be the first port of call. A friend of mine is opening up a cafe/coffee shop/acoustic venue type thing up. She knows st all about coffee and I know nothing about commercial machines. I've told her about the evils of Starbucks and the like but when it comes to the machine I know nothing.

So, what machine is available for the best price possible that could cope with a town centre position. She will have to cater for all the 'experts' as we have a Starbucks, a Costa and something else that I can't remember. Any ideas?

Sorry, haven't a clue when it comes to commercial machines. There are lots of threads for household machines, such as Here.
Good luck.smile

Tell her to cover her eyes.

An espresso machine that is built to work all day, every day will run her 5 figures.

That said she may find one at auction.

So are the Gaggia ones at about £4k not up to the job? Can't believe how expensive they are to be honest. The problem is I'm assuming all the Starbucks kids will want every type of coffee. I can also see students being her main source of custom.

ETA: Did you move me to the ghost forum Plotters? Or will I get a better response here?

She sounds clueless.

FFS do NOT lend her any money.

When she goes bust, I'll give her 50% for her machine.

She is at the moment but it is very early days. I just thought you lot might know a thing or two about coffee. Posh people always know about coffee.

If it's got to be stylish Elektra
http://www.elektrasrl.com/
may be one to go for they are super stylish, well made but redicoulusly expensive (think micro car money!)
If she knows nothing about coffe a course for baristas is ESSENTIAL (would have thought if you buy a professional machine they'd sort it for you)
Servicing will come at a price , too
Well worth to speak to a big roaster (Illy, Lavazza, Bristot)- they may do her a deal (training and contribute to maker) if she commits herself to buy their coffee

Faema are another good maker of commercial kit. Whatever, it should be one with a three way valve behind the group head so it can be backflushed after every session wink

The most important thing is the service backup - the last thing you want is your £5k machine out of action for a week waiting for parts. Go and look at the stuff Starbucks, Costa, Caffe Nero, Pizza Express etc use, their business depends on the machines working all the time so they don't buy duffers. It's the quality of beans you use that make the difference to the taste of the coffee at that price point, not the machine so I'd say that's a secondary consideration after price, service etc.
