Funny, I've just filtered and bottled my 2007 sloe vodka, and very nice it is too. The recipe (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's) said use cheap vodka - which I did - and it has mellowed into a far smoother and nicer drink than I had expected.
2kg sloes, 1 kg sugar, 3 bottles of cheap vodka is a bit sweet for me. This year when I make it - and I've been scouting for blackthorn bushes already - I'll reduce the sugar content slightly on the basis that you can always add more.

you say use cheap vodka.
do you mean asda smart price stuff or smirnoff?
As I've been thinking of doing this for a while now from reading other peoples threads on here about them making there own flavour spirits, but dont really know how to do it?
anyone have a linky?
I used cheapo Asda vodka for mine. However I do think the slow maturation with sloes has softened it. I tried the sloe vodka after a few months and it was just as rough as the vodka I'd originally used. do you mean asda smart price stuff or smirnoff?

Anything else, I'd be inclined to use decent stuff. 'Green Mark' vodka is surprisingly smooth for the price and often on offer at Waitrose for £12 or so. I'd easily rate it above Absolut which is £14 or more.

e.g. 2 litre bottle/jar. put into it about 800g of your chosen fruit, add between 1/3 and 1/2 of that weight in sugar, fill the container with your chosen spirit, seal, shake every so often and leave for at least 3 months.
I use the level up from the cheapest supermarket, about £10 for a litre of vodka.
