Anyone been to Windsor Grill?
Discussion
I'm interested in knowing if anyone has been recently too. I have had two reports from friends who have been there. One said good, but expensive, the other said bad & expensive.
Having memories of the place as a fairly crappy old pub (the Merrie Wives of Windsor?), and seeing the current layout is pretty much the same as the pub, puts me off a bit.
I was surprised to see it still open when I went past the other day seeing that A W-T's business has gone bust, and nearly went in, but we decided to go for ribeyes up at the Cattle Grid in the old station. (nice fries, good medium rare steak, side order of coleslaw, Malbec was so,so, reasonable value at c £20 a head, but then minimal service charge as you order from the bar).

It's very close to where I live.
I know no-one who has been and our perception is that there are many better value restaurants in the town which provide a good quality of food.
Please post your review if you do go, would be very interested

Where would you recommend? It's for my Birthday so somewhere nice! It doesn't have to be right in the centre as we are staying just outside of the town so wherever we go it will be a cab ride. We eat most types of food.I know no-one who has been and our perception is that there are many better value restaurants in the town which provide a good quality of food.

I'd say give Gilbey's on Eton High Street a try. Good traditional English style food, with a really relaxed atmosphere adn good service. There's a nice table with a cushioned seat in the front window which is my wife's favourite spot. It's worth trying their wine from their estate near Henley.

I've been a few times - it's OK, good pork taster, and fine steaks. Last time I was there was two weeks ago, in the private dining room upstairs.
I, like a few others here, prefer the Hinds Head but regularly use both for business entertaining and pleasure.
I used to like Bel and the Dragon, haven't been for a while, but that was a good Sunday afternoon place. The Two Brewers is OK, too, a lot more like pub food. The Cottage near Winkdield is worth seeking out, as well.
Most other restaurants in Windsor are pretty poor in my opinion.

Spice Route was great until Mirindula sold it, though I largely agree with that. Can't and won't see it as The Bel and Dragon though, it's The George!

Think I must be the only one underwhelmed by the hindhead.
I don't entirely disagree with you there Roger. For the money there are quite a few little things they could do a lot better. I still love the oxtail & kidney pudding though!
I also agree about food in Windsor. Despite the fact it is quite a destination nowadays, nothing really stands out from the selection of average chains or not so special indies.
Another suggestion is to take a trip out to the Royal Oak in Paley street, which is a good bet for good food. Again, not cheap though.

I've heard good things about Paley Street, must get there soon.
