I have a Magimix "Le Glacier 1.1". Just the basic gel-filled-bowl in the freezer, but it was cheap and it works. Certainly worth trying a cheap one before you flash serious money; ours is currently in a cupboard as we ran out of room in the freezer. frown

Do you really need a 'gadget' for this? A shallow plastic tub works well for me. Stick this into the freezer and get busy with the whisk as soon as ice crystals start forming around the edge. Bung back in freezer and repeat 3 or so times depending on how smoooth you want the results to be.

I got a Kenwood IM200 from Amazon. They're reduced from £40 to £25 at the moment. Makes about a litre of ice cream in about 30 minutes. It is also small so takes up less space in the cupboard when you lose interest! There are some bad reviews on there but they are from mongs who have not read the instructions. I also got the Ben & Jerries recipe book from there, which was about £5.

Great fun inventing new flavours. Not so great for the waistline!

We have a similar one made by Krups. Does the job perfectly well and I would say it's all you need for making the occasional batch at home. Ours gets used very frequently and we haven't bought icecream for a long time.

Whatever you do, get a copy of this book.

cheers for that, added to wish list on amazon - rarely buy ice cream, but if I do it is the dairy stuff, would like to make low sugar sorbets and the like, need to investigate more

the non milk fat is usually pork fat, eg walls ice cream is made by the same company as what makes sausages...

Same here. A cheap but effective way of getting 1ltr of homemade ice-cream in less than an hour (inc prep and making the base).

Always tastes better than shop-bought! thumbup

Sounds like the same sort of idea as the Disney one my kids have - I was sceptical but it works amazingly well:
