Dumbass question but, how does one work a pizza stone?

Preheated it in the oven, whipped it out, put dough on it, put toppings on, back in the oven for 15. Burnt on top, raw in the middle. Armadillos!

Surely it can't be this hard?

I do the following:

Heat stone in oven to very hot (250C) for quite a long time.
Prepare pizza on a peel (just a bit of ply)
Open oven, slide pizza from peel onto the stone (pizza sits on a piece of baking parchment so it slides of the peel easily)
Close oven
Enjoy pizza 7-8 mins later (thin base).

How thick are your bases?

Not so thick, certainly not "Chicago town deep"... but I will try the baking parchment / board tip thanks!
