Slow cooker and electric steamer - energy saved
Discussion
I cook a lot and previously used the electric oven and hob. I'd estimated that this was the major portion of my £50 a month electricity bill, and I was right.
Since switching to the slow cooker and electric steamer, my electricity consumption has halved. The slow cooker was £11.97 to buy (Asda), and the steamer £14.65 (Tesco). Taking into account further savings made from buying cheaper cuts of meat (which have produced delicious stews), these devices paid for themselves within a month.

Cooked gammon in it the other week
then used the "stock" to make Pea & "ham" soup.

though I used a cheaper bacon collar joint - one of the Waitrose 'forgotten cuts'. Lovely it was.Shoulders, trotters, tails and bellies. That's ll we eat in our house. Apart from the odd rib-eye or sirloin when the fancy takes me. So much more flavour in those cuts.
I did actually buy a fillet steak a few weeks ago and I was very disappointed with it, texturally and flavour-wise.

I have had a slow cooker for 10 years, tried it a few times when threads like this come up and the enthusiasum builds, but have never had a satisfactory result. Maybe its the length of time I put it on for. I put it on in the morning about 8am and open it up at 7pm, is that too long to leave it?

That amount of time should be fine - what are you cooking in it?Gassing Station | Food, Drink & Restaurants | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
