Picnic Food Suggestions
Discussion
Off for a spot of 'al fresco' dining with friends tomorrow, everyone is taking some food along.
None of us are really a 'scotch egg and twiglets' type of bunch.
Not been on a picnic since I was about 6.
Any suggestions of decent picnic style foods to take?
I was thinking about some olives, hummus and nice breads.

Wraps are a good alternative to sandwiches. Maybe a nice cheese board!!None of us are really a 'scotch egg and twiglets' type of bunch.

Good quality chipolata sausages done in the oven, then cooled.
Honestly - everyone loves them. Cut them into two for serving.
Good quality pork pie and a jar of pickle.
If you make salad then make sure you chop it up so it's easy to eat: shredded lettuce, cubes of red pepper etc and pack the dressing seperately and pour it over just before serving.
Of course you could pack a disposable BBQ and cook some items if it's possible where you are going.
Most important of all: Chilly Bin filled with champagne and beer.

Mixed fresh olives, artichokes in olive oil and sunblush tomatoes.
Oysters, pack them in a tub over ice.
Take a slices of bread remove crust spread with fillings of choice the roll up.
Smoked Salmon parcels filled with crab and lemon mayonnaise.
Ballotine chicken wrapped in air dried ham.... slice before you go and wrap in foil.
Mini tarts, mini frittatas, vol au vents, all these can have a range of fillings.
Salads, bean salad, mini tomatoe and feta cheese, spiced couscous, crudites and dips.
Pack everything into small tupperwear boxes of the same size even if you are buying pre prepared bits.
I also always pack a rubbish bag and plenty of soft drinks. We love picnics

Selection of cold meats ( pre-cooked chicken fillets,various hams,pastrami,tongue,garlic sausage,salami)
Salad ( crispy lettuce,cucumber,tomatoes,radishes,watercress,red/green peppers, spring onions) cold pre-cooked jersey potatoes and a jar of mayonnaise.
Fresh baked baguettes, butter, selection of cheeses.
Plenty of booze
Perhaps strawberries/raspberries in meringue nests with cream as pudding

There is certainly a lot to be said for a fresh baguette, some old brie, and a bottle of cheap "Vin Rouge".If you are doing a leafy salad, keep the dressing separate. "Beany" salads are nicer, though, IMO, and don't tend to wilt.
And those individual bottles of champagne, with straws, are cool.
Too late for the OP maybe, but try this.

Take a small, decent, round cottage loaf or equivalent.
Slice off the top (keep it for later). Scoop out the insides.
Then inside the hollowed out loaf, add layers of all sorts of nice stuff. Cold meats, soft cheese, roquefort, gherkins/cornichons, pesto, artichoke hearts in oil etc. Layer it all up until slightly proud of the top. Then put the sliced off top of the loaf on as a lid and weigh the whole thing down with a couple of recipe books and a couple of cans of beans. You're looking to compact the layers and squeeze juices/fats into the surrounding bread.
Few hours later, take it with you to your favoured picnic location.
Slice it like a cake.
Fookin' lovely.
