Resturant in the midlands

Ive looked at the guide but need some opinion of a restaurant i can take the missus on an anniversary dinner to. Went to simpsons last year which was good and looking for something similar this year. Don't mind travelling but has to be a nice place. Any help would be appreciated.

Hambleton Hall is worth a look.

Restaurant Sat Bains is highly regarded although I haven't tried it myself.

Is that the Simpsons in Kenilworth ? If you like it around there then there then Raffles Malaysian is cool and The Kenilworth is a cool place to stop, quirky with a a good mixologist who works there.

If you really want to try somewhere else, I could recommend Swinfen Hall near Lichfield. Quiet, but classy in an understated way. Excellent service.

Just dont order the steak to be "well done" - I hear they're not too keen on sharp knives

Purnells or Edmonds in Birmingham... or Turners in Harborne are all going to give you that wow factor.

Do you have a budget to work towards as I know some nice gastro pubs too.

Where abouts in the Midlands are you based?

Ooh I've been here. It's lovely, you're right about the romantic bit - we retired into the snug with port and cheese after dinner, complete with a real roaring fire

It is indeed, but you can have the wines to accompany the tasting menu for £38 I think - which doesn't seem so bad.
I haven't been personally, just got to try some of their food at the last Birmingham Restaurant Festival www.visitbirmingham.com/taste

I've not been - been meaning to go, but oddly enough was slightly put off by the fact that my local fish & chip shop got a better local authority hygiene rating at www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk

But I've been to Simpsons, and thought it was great, and *will* try Purnells soon

Heard good things about both Purnells and Edmunds...the latter HAD a Michelin Star when in Henley in Arden, but lost it when he moved the restaurant.

Can personally recommend the Bucklemakers on St Paul's Square. No gongs but IMHO worth an easy 2 AA Rosettes, plus they've a lovely Argentian Malbec at around £23 a bottle. Plenty of fresh fish/seafood, plus excellent venison, steak and a very decent foie gras. Nice atmosphere too, and about 50yds from the Jam House for drinks beforehand...

it isn't there anymore Has been replaced by a new one called petit gourmand Haven't made it in there yet (too far to walk from us! ) But it is getting rave reviews!

Would echo Raffles and the Kenilworth although that doesn't serve food

the Dining Room at Mallory Court has a Michelin star; as does

Simpson's in Birmingham

and

le champingnon sauvage in Cheltenham has 2 (not that far really)

if not too far try harrys place in grantham very very nice and very intimate, i know its not strictly midlands but a hell of a drive if you pick the right roads and lets face it you have the cars to enjoy such a drive!

might be needing to book early though!
