I'm getting married next year, and i've taken the resposibilty of sorting out the catering(as we're having a marquee)

I just need some honest feedback. I hate the thought of just picking one meal for people to eat, was thinking some kind of chicken meal as most people like it, with a veggie option for the tree huggersyuck
Or, have a quality hot buffet, so people can have a chioce of what they eat.
The sit down meal seems more 'posh' or though i'm not really bothered what people think, plus it's more expensive, and the cost of this wedding is getting crazy! But would a buffet seem to stiggy??

What would you guys prefer if you were going to a wedding??

Depends how many people you intend to invite to the Reception. If lots then catering costs will have to be trimmed. Older people such as grannies might not enjoy the hurly-burly of a buffet.

Daughter got married recently and venue provided the menu for a sit-down meal which guests chose from in advance.

It's what you want, not what they want its your day. Sit down is worth the money if you ask me, makes all the speeches etc have a bit more weight.

Not sure about the marriage thing though you might want to re-think that. Just pick someone you dis-like and give them a house, its better in the long run ;-)

At our wedding last year we had a buffet for the evening do.

Couple of years ago my friend got married and for the evening do they had jacket potatos with a selection of fillings that you could help yourself to.

What about doing bacon sarnies for the evening do?

Or get the local fish n chip van to come up and serve food?

It's for veggies. They tend to be very beligerent and whilst personally I am all for the Ramsay approach (to wit: eat up of fk off) but this is a wedding after all. I looked for a picture of a nut loaf but frankly it looked too extravagant and thoughtful to feed to lentilists.

I was at a wedding the other day.
There were platters of cheese and various meats on the table, plus nibbles like sundried tomatoes, olives, humous, bread etc. We tucked in then they did the speeches, after that everyone was able to go and help themselves to a buffet with a ham, prawns, pate etc etc.

It worked really well but was quite a casual wedding with 70 people.

We're having a hot fork buffet for our wedding next year. It seemed - to both of us - the best compromise between a decent sit down meal, and giving the guests some choice. We're probably going for chilli, steak & ale pie, and a veggie pasta thingummy.

We had a hot buffet for our wedding, around 120 guests, and it's still talked about.

BIG tip - have the speeches BEFORE the meal.

Makes for a much more relaxed event.

I got married 4 years ago and had a sit down reception for 170 people. when we sent out the invites we poped a card in the envelope with a choice of chicken, beef or Vegi. It went down a storm as everyone had what they wanted!!

For our wedding we offered a choice of veggie, lamb shank or chicken with parma ham, making clear if no response on return then the default meal was chicken.
for the evening we had a BBQ and salad for people to pick over, seemed to go down ok.

We're having a fork buffet for our wedding (1 month today!). We didn't want the formality of a sit-down 3 course meal, too hot in the middle of July. Also, there is no seating plan as we want it as relaxed as possible, so people can sit down where they want to eat or wander out into the hotel's garden to fill their faces.

some friends used a Morroccan caterer for their wedding - it worked really well. Big platters of cous cous, tagines, salads, and a grill for lamb chops etc.

much more interesting (and cheaper) than the normal wedding fare!

thanks for the replys everyone, it's becoming obvious that the wedding is going to be all we think about soon!!

I'm leaning toward a hot for buffet, it's for about 90 people, and i'd like it to feel relaxed.

What month is the wedding? You don't want hot food in July/August nor salad in November.

i'm in exactly the same place- want a Marquee wedding and a less formal atmosphere than the over done "3 course meal in a formal setting", but struggling with food. A served buffet doesn't work for me really- rather have help yourself but don't want a complete free for all!

We had a BBQ, cooking up whilst everyone was mingling so the smells would get the saliva flowing, then served as a buffet. It was fantastic, and had a mix of meat, and veg things for the rabbit impersonators. Much better than the standard sit down chicken in sauce with veg or veg pasta choices of boring weddings.
