food in central london
Discussion
So I'm going to do the shopping thing soon in oxford street, regent street etc. Where should I have a decent lunch - food and drink. Must be near enough - covent garden is ok but not much further. My main bug bear is that I don't want to book. Just arrive and eat. Up to £30 per head. Any Ideas?
There are lots of restaurants in St Christopher's Place. However I couldn't vouch for the quality since it has been a few years since I've worked in the area.
You could go a bit further afield to Marylebone Lane, The Golden Hind chippy there was always rather good. Also Marylebone High Street itself and the excellent Providores. You might sneak in at under £30 per head if you go for the Tapas menu.
Failing that, the Tas chain of Anatolian restaurants. All fine and dandy, except the nearest one to where you'll be is in Bloomsbury.

I'd reccomend pingpong (the one on gt marlbrough st near liberty is probably closest) for some afternoon dim sum.
You can't actually book there, its on a first come first served basis, but apart from 8pm on a friday or saturday you'll never find yourself queueing for more than a few minutes. Falls nicely within your budget too unless you're a complete gluton and order half the menu.

I recommend this place.. www.tibits.co.uk it's just off Regent St.
you load your plate up and you pay by the weight, great food and very healthy.

That bob bob doodah, is it a fish restaurant?
bob bob ricard? they serve fish but it's a catch all - breakfasts, lunch and dinneryou can have a full on american style breakfast at 11.30pm if you want but I decided to have lobster and chips last saturday instead
if you are after fish, randal and aubin is worth a go as you can't book, just turn up and wait

I can second this although IIRC, as all good chippies, it's closed on a Monday
Very much so.
The Golden Hind is probably the best fish and chip i've ever been to, and i've tried most of the London chippies as recommended in the press, various food guides, etc.
Must have visited ten or so times now. Stonkingly fresh cod cooked correctly, i.e. slightly translucent, not overfried like so many other places. The homemade fishcakes are outstanding as a starter.
There is a metric s
t-load of choice in that area. Remember, between Oxford St and Covent Garden you have Soho to the south, and Charlotte St to the north.
Care to give us a 'cuisine'?
ETA- How about the creperie in St Christopher Place? http://www.stchristophersplace.com/StoreDetail.asp...
Have the Chilli crepe and a cider. In the Sun, if you are lucky. Well within your budget.

Bodeans looks great. 16oz burger is mine. My conscience says I should go to Tibits. But I'm not a veggie and I love my red meat. I've been saying for years that someone should do something like this. Bodeans is also very close to Oxford St and right in soho with the record shops, which is where I am heading. I knew I would find out loads of places from here. I'm ashamed to call myself british, as I know nothing about London. But then again, I'm not a Londoner and have never worked there.

In which case, check out the butcher on Berwick Street. The sausages are lovely. The fruit and veg market is also worth a poke around. Also Gerry's liquor store on Old Compton Street if you're after anything unusual (or just want a gawp.)Soho is one of my favourite parts of London, in all honesty. Just a few steps away from all the tourist tat on Oxford Street are some lovely neighbourhood pubs and old skool Italian cafés and sandwich shops. Catch them while they're still there.
