Hacving recently got back from 10 days away I have discovered that my runner beans have gone a bit mental in the garden.
I have what can only be described as a 'glut' beans and I have no realy idea what to do with them (apart from serve as a side veg which wouldn't make much of an impact)

Anyone got any interesting ideas?

Dear brum,

not interesting but share your bounty with neighbours/friends/family, pick 'em early before you can see the bean bulges for best taste/least stringiness...

...I'm in Bristol and love runner beans smile

We had fajitas the other night and my better half made a chilli guacamole using runner beans after blanching them and removing the skins. Superb doesn't even come close.

Runner bean sandwich - yum yum!!

I remember when I was young I was only allowed bland food as I had been quite poorly, but my family had runner beans with their dinner, freshly picked from by grandad's garden, and they were (well still are) my favourite veg. So when my Mum wasn't looking my Grandad made me a runner bean sandwich - heaven!!lick

If you're going to freeze them they will need blanching first. To do this, get a big pan of boiling water, drop the beans in and let them boil for 2 minutes. Then remove them and drench them in cold water (throw them in a collander in the sink and run the tap over them)

Doing this stops them going soggy when frozen.

Bag them up whist still damp and put them on the freezer

To cook from frozen, get a pan of boiling water on the go and simply remove the beans in one frozen lump out of the bag and drop them in. Should take 5 mins from the moment the water starts to boil again. Be sue to break up the frozen lump as it defrosts in the water.

Runner bean chutney is rather nice too.
Recipe;
2lb runner beans sliced or chopped
1 1/2 lbs onions sliced
1 heaped tablespoon of cornflour
1 " " of tumeric
1 " " of dry mustard
1lb soft brown sugar
1lb demerara sugar
1 1/2pints of vinegar
Cook beans in boiling water until tender then drain well.Cook onions in 1/2 pint vinegar. Mix dry ingredients to a paste with the rest of the vinegar. Add this to the onion and beans mixture and boil for 30mins until thickened.
Put into jars and leave to mature for two months.
