Was walking a neighbour's dog in the woods today and noticed 2 big white mushrooms ( ball shaped with a very small stalk) - they smell like normal mushrooms, and I suspect they are perfectly fine to eat...so I have them.
However, it's not really worth risking being ill for the sake of 50ps worth of mushrooms...and the internet either says they are fine to eat or highly poisonous...any comments?

They may taste nice, alternativley they may kill you. Don't eat unless you know, there are lots that will make you ill, even 'fake' versions of real edible ones....

I've sliced both of them in half - totally white...I think they're puffballs.
What an exciting find...now what to do with them. I'll probably keep them in the fridge and have a mushroom omelette for tomorrows breakfast smile.
...Gives me the opportunity to check PH and see if I've really picked some dangerous ones biggrin

Are you experienced in this field (no pun intended)?

I had second thoughts over eating what seemed to be to be an Ink Cap at the weekend. It just might have been the iffy one (can't remember the name) & the mrs trashed the stork before I checked it.

I have eaten some 'gathered' before - the grounds of Eton College always used to provide a good crop (nothing wacky either) smile

Do you ever think "not sure about this" & give it a miss?

What have you found & consumed over the years?

I only ever pick species that I can positively ID and know to be good eating.

The trick is to start with species that are easiest to identify / impossible to confuse with poisonous ones and take it from there.

They look like a phallos impudicus...but they're round football type shaped as opposed to shaft type shapes. They smell so good, I can't think that they might be poisenous...they've got to be edible.

So long as you're sure they're not of the Amanita family, go ahead.

Google for pictures of Lycoperdon perlatum - that's what I think you've most likely got. Though you might find the cores are yellow by the morning - in which case they're not edible.

I've looked at the Amanita familiy pics and they are all red caps...mine are white balls...have taken pic...just need to find stick that takes memory card.

Typical...I've stuck this 'memory type' pen card drive that downloads pics from a camera...and it doesn't work. I obviously haven't got the right software for it.
On balance, I shouldn't be eating strange things that look and smell OK...but could well kill me. It's not like mushrooms cost much anyway.

Yes - it's a common find by verges and on roundabouts. smile

Young Amanitas at the 'button' stage (one of the nastiest Amanitas is pure white) can be confused with puffballs. If you've cut them lengthways and there's no trace of a stalk or gills forming inside, you've most likely got a puffball.
