Newcastle-under-lyme is close enough though, might be worth a look around there

Saffron's curry house on the roundabout was about the finest eaterie we could find when at Keele.

I dont think there are any particularly fancy eateries close by. Theres quite a few nice country pubs around the county though

Loads of nice places in Newcastle just down the road.

Might not be what you are after but Buffet Island is the most awesome all you can eat Chinese. Masses of choice and very well priced too!

Otherwise, there are tones of places around. There's a place called The Arc or Arch, cant remember. Very nice place. Just have a drive around the town centre. Loads of bars and restaurants.

I can strongly recommend :-

- Broughton Arms Newcastle Rd, Balterley, Crewe, CW2 5PY
01270 820227 (phone to book)

OR

- Crown Inn, Den Lane, Wrinehill, Crewe, CW3 9BT 01270 820472

They are about 3 to 5 miles towards Crewe if you like your traditional pub grub. There is a pub in Keele directly opposite the uni entrance if you dont want to travel.

Chip shop near Shelton New Road isnt bad. Loads of chips but the fish is a bit iffy at times. Spam fritter usually does the job

I took my (now) wife for fish & chips on her 21st. It still get regularly mentioned 30 years later.

'Top notch' is all a question of taste. I must eminate from a differenf socio-economic background as I consider the lamb Henry at the Broughton to be the best I ever tasted!
And Pecks is fantastic by the way, but is hardly in Keele. I was trying to come up with a few places that are closest to Keele.

Fair enough - I wasn't quite sure about the distance to Pecks. Many pubs have more or less become restaurants now, so I shouldn't jump to conclusions, but you don't usually get the quiet ambience that I assumed the OP would be looking for on this occasion.

I do wish though that we could get back to the days of being able to get a reasonable meal for 2 for £20 in a pub. What is it with pub restaurants where they think it's OK to charge extra for vegetables and chips? mad
