Toasted sandwiches. cloud9

One of my favourite unhealthy snack foods, and I'm keen on some new ideas for fillings, so what do people suggest?

My favourite at the moment is simple. Nice granary bread, first slice butter side down in an unheated frying pan. Grated mature Cheddar and Parmesan mixed together, topped with a diced green chilli, then some slices of Speck or other smoked cured ham, and the other slice of bread, butter side up. Putting it onto a middling heat and allowing the pan to warm up gradually lets the cheese melt nicely before the bread burns. smile

My favourite at the moment is to cover the bread with Branston's Jalapeño and Chilli relish, then add some mozzarella cheese and sliced chorizo and top off with jalapeno peppers from a jar. Works particularly well on a panini....

Ham and cheese in a toastie machine.
2 slices of white bread. Cover all 4 sides in margarine(stork) not butter. Place ham and cheese on bread next put top slice of bread on top. Use non metalic instrument to place sandwich in toastie maker. Clamp lid down and wait . Once toasted enjoy.

lountza and halloumi. super yum.

i am a huge fan of the breville though, its a great thing to experiment with leftovers. curry toastie, chinese toastie [rice optional], all good stuff! full english breakfast is a winner, and for pudding dust the outisde of the bread in caster sugar and use chopped mars mar and marshmallow fluff.

sod railcards, natwest should dish out brevilles for student accounts smile

The tried and tested for me. Lashings of strong cheddar (Colliers tends to be in the fridge) and a couple of slices of ham.

Sorry! It required two different puking smileys to demonstrate my utter loathing for that stuff! I'd rather coat the bread in axle grease! hehe

Cheese + preferred filling (I quite like the hamd and green chilli combo myself too)

But the sandwich must be constructed well and cooked enough to burn the edges.

I cannot resist a good 'Welsh Rarebit'.......& no, it has nothing to do with my nationality rolleyes

It has to be done properly though, there's nothing worse than stopping at a cafe, asking for W/R just to be served up plain old cheese on toast.

According to mrs Q/S, a REAL W/R is: grated Caerphilly cheese - 1/2 teaspoon grainy mustard - 1 beaten egg - slug of bitter.......mixed well, spread thickly on toast then grilled until brown & bubbling.

On a personal note I tend to prefer it heavy on the mustard thumbup

Hard to beat a proper "croque monsieur" (ham inside, Welsh Rarebit mix on the top, toasted), though the plethora of ham&cheese toasties suggests we are largely in agreement. As a bonus, you only need a grill.

Two slices of toast, side by side. Butter, slice of 'real' ham (thick) then place a pineapple ring on the centre of each. Teaspoon of Branston in the hole in the ring. Grate extra strong cheddar over the top (don't be shy). Place under grill till cheese melts, or starts to toast, according to taste.

Hawaiian toast! yum

The Vienetta Toastie

Two bits of bread and a good slice of Walls Vienetta.

This is not a recipe but a fond memory of someone who thought he would give this a go, the light came on, he hastily got it out of the toaster expecting luke warm crispy bread and an iced treat inside.

What in fact happened is that he bit into a liquid centre that was almost but not quite hotter than the sun. Cue the greatest face in the history of faces and him hurridly rushing around the living room consuming anything and everything liquid.

Spread of Pesto, chunks of cooked chicken, plenty of red onion and a little grated mozzarela. Good grind of pepper & a little salt.

Jam toasties are a similarly bad idea, I made one over 10 years ago now and I still don't think it has cooled down hehe

Cheese & Beans. Careful, though, you have to let it stand for a few minutes otherwise the bean juice is hotter than the sun.
