Don´t eat anywhere near the port or la ramblas... I say don´t eat near the port, but maybe in the one which the cable car ends at.

Let me find the list my secretary has prepared for me as it has 50 or so restaurants on there. I´ll put on here assuming I can work out how to format it well

Be prepared for nothing to open until 9pm, with most people eating around 10-10.30. Cava is cheap and very good in general.

That's a strangely sweeping statement. Would you care to elaborate on it?

If you mean not to eat directly on one of the Ramblas or in the restaurants next to the aquarium, then I would agree, but there are some great restaurants in that general area. I can't remember the name of the one just off the Rambla de Santa Monica, but the one I would definitely recommend on the port is the 7 Portes

whilst you're there go for a cocktail on the roof terrace also.

Brasserie Flo which is in a road running parellel with the south side of the Plaza de Catalunya ( big square at the top of the Ramblas) Great fish.

If you're a bit of a foodie wander into the market off the Ramblas - according to Rick Stein it's the best market in Europe.

Sorry, yes I mean directly on la ramblas. There are some great places just off, but the locals eat in places which are 2-3 roads away from the main roads. My favourite on a budget is Flamant on Enric de granados which is excellent food in a great atmosphere... also has a smoking section for those wanting to return to yesteryear.

It's a lot simpler to go to Anthony's in Leeds! Last time I went there, back end of last year, three of the staff were ex El Bulli!

..S'pose you could always fly to Leeds/Bradford to heighten the experience .

My experience of Barcelona was very brief, but I would definately recommend a trip into Girona, either on the way back to the airport or a day out. We came across a couple of excellent restaurants that looked like they would be pricey and really weren't.

This is excellent ! We are going to the MonteCarlo hotel on the 18th of October so this is very useful, thanks guys.
My wife thinks we will be sightseeing but actually I will be eating and drinking

Not strictly a restaurant but you cannot buy a bottle of Cava without a tapas, not to be missed its in a little back street near the port, known as the secret cava bar - http://www.canpaixano.com/en/home/home.html.

I agree with the idea of staying away form the main tourist areas, try down by the beach, which you will find is not full of tourists but mainly locals.

Los Caracoles and Madrid Barcelona were both excellent when I was there (admittedly I was there in 2004).

About half way down Las Ramblas on the R/H side walking towards the sea is one of the best food markets that I have visited and with plenty of very good "Tapas " bars in and around the market.

Also some very good fish restaurants in the old fishing quarter at the bottom Las Ramblas across the road.

Another vote for the foodmarket called "la boqueria" - it's awsome
There is a food stall just at the entrance which is totallly bustling (lots of posh bankers, trendy people and good looking girls (profession????)- with excellent food - limited joice and difficult communication but reat if some locals take you there

Definitely recommend tapatapa on the port. Great food, lovely views and surprisingly cheap. Also, la Botiga, about 3/4 down Las Ramblas heading toward the port, down a little side street.

And the sister restaurant Passadis del Pep. Don't expect a menu and make sure everyone likes seafood . . . all sorts of seafood!
