What's the reddish powder you find on prawn cocktail and egg mayonnaise - cayenne pepper or paprika?

I wasn't sure so bought both; having sniffed each, I'm still no wiser!

Hmmm, always thought it was paprika as it's not as hot as cayenne...scratchchin

You can find recipes using either, but I think it should be Cayenne:

Paprika!
If you haven't got any just use chilli powder, it'll be fine

Paprika is the answer, but cayenne is fine too. Sprinkle more on than just to garnish and it actually tastes good too!

Cayenne will add much more spice than your average paprika.

As above, Paprika is the definative answer. It is virtually flavourless, compared to Cayenne Pepper anyway.

Should have had a poll!

Just had some foodies round - they say definitely paprika (which they tell me is ground red pepper)

Depends whether you want decoration or flavour?

I prefer cayenne because the heat and prawns go together well, and the mayo calms the whole thing down.

You've been buying the wrong Paprika :P

Are you using sweet or hot?

Well my dinner party went very well. Got as far as laying out the nice hot plates fo the main course - everything was cooked just right - and then they said - 'Where's the starter?'

Arse.

What about a compromise with some 'hot paprika'?

Its a combination of the two....

Delia uses Cayenne

Nigella uses Paprika

Gary Rhodes uses Rouille and they all use Tabasco

Each to their own
