Looking for Sunday Lunch ideas, max drive of 1 hour from St.Helens area. No real budget as such, looked at Northcote Manor but want to eat around 2pm which is a bit late for them. Any more ideas, except the 3 fishes as I went there only a couple of weeks ago!

Yeah I really want to go there but they won't serve at 2pm on the sunday, and we have something on in the morning so can't really eat any earlier :-(

This is my local, it's a good hour from St Helens, but they do a great sunday lunch.

Oh yes yes

Not been there for about 2 years but used to live a few miles away & walked the dark country lanes home in a state of falling over quite a few times!drunk

Always great food there & splendid beer. If craft stuff is your thing, take the small side road that runs down the side of the pub and go to Cedar farm craft centre that you'll find about 2 mins drive down there, just follow the road, quite a few individual mini-shops and studios.

Sadly this restaurant is no where near as good as it used to be. It was one of my favourites in the area but I have been twice earlier this year and the food was very poor.

I would try Cheshire, the Pheasant at Burwardsley or the Dysart Arms, Bunbury are both much better than the E&C.

After a recommendation I tried this place,

The Millstone, Harvey Lane , Golborne

I was told the prices were very keen and the quality / quantity of the food was good.

I'm not influenced by price alone , I'd rather pay more for good food than have the standard '3663' range on special offer.

With this in mind I gave it a try , ended up playing it safe , 3 course Sunday Lunch £7.95

I wasn't really expecting much at that price , we'd been out the week before and paid £12 per head for 2 course Sunday Lunch elsewhere and it was less than impressive, so at £4 less for one course more set my expectations quite low.

I sat down and began to notice the decor was a cut above your average pub ( it has just re-opened apparently) and the tables all seemed to be polished clean rather than wiped down with a streaky cloth. Things were looking up.

The waitress arrived with the first course, I had Prawn Cocktail , my wife Soup of the day, in this case Tomato.

The portions were a good size , both came with a warm piece of Baguette, well presented and quite tasty for what they were. I'd also noticed the service was good , quick and polite

Main Course , Sunday Roast Beef with the usual trimmings. Again well presented , plentiful , properly cooked and tasty.

Followed by , Winter fruit Cheese cake and cream for me and Chocolate sponge for my wife.

All in all exceptional value , I'd happily have paid twice the amount.

Well worth a look if you live near enough ( M6 Jn 23 )

Other specials on offer,

Monday ,2 8oz steaks , chips , etc and a bottle of wine £15.95

There's a special for everyday of the week as well as the main menu and some 2 for £10 deals.

Some of the draught beers were around £1.70 per pint and Guinness a bargain at £2.20

They are part of a group of Pubs , can't vouch for these personally but others in the Northwest are

Hesketh's Arms, New Hall Lane , Preston

Eagle & Child , Main Street , Billinge
