Can anyone recommend a decent cookery course - want to get one for the OH for xmas (her request - not mine!) knife skills, how to poach an egg, that type of stuff. We're in Reading

Do not get her a cookery course for Christmas!

What she really wants is diamond earrings or some other sparkly things.

By getting her a cookery course you are effectively telling her that she is a bad cook and could do better.

If you do proceed with her suggestion do not be suprised when she unleaches a severe case of the mental on you on Christmas day.

Newlyns have an excellent facility above their farm shop.

Just off Junction 5 of the M3.

Haven't done it myself but it very well regarded locally...

I once bought SWMBO a food blender for Xmas. I have never been allowed to forget it.

Naughty undies are a better bet.

Take a look at your local college for evening classes. I agree its a crap present, but maybe worth doing together. Did a Thai course with some mates when I got seconded to wales and its worthwhile but can imagine dull as hell if on your own.

The Leith's courses are excellent, Some can be a bit advanced but they do, do a knife skills beginners course.

Bit of a thread revival smile

Looking to buy the girlfriend a cookery course, something quite basic, for Christmas. She really enjoys cooking and so a knife skills and basics refresher I would think she'd love. I'd hope. Obviously, because this could go really badly.

Anyway, I'm looking at the Leiths courses which look really good but, a year on, wondered if anyone has any other experiences to share?

The Newlyns facilities are excellent but I've not done a course there.

Rick Steins basic fish course is a great day out. Not the knife skills but very much focused on preparing and cooking fish/squid/scallops etc. Lots of wine will be drunk...

I've also done a day at the Hand and Flowers(Marlow) in the kitchen there. Not really a cookery course as such when I did it more of a working in a 1star kitchen experience. I really enjoyed it (and they do lunch for £10).

I have done another Leith's course recently (Winter Meats) and would definitely recommend their courses.
