Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants in New York? Without paying $1000 dollars a head would be good! we're there all day so ideally nothing too stuffy where you have to wear a suit!

Thanks.

Blue Fin has a nice restaurant, it's on Times Square.

I had Christmas dinner there two years ago. Was wonderful.

ETA the restaurant is on the first floor in the same building as the W Hotel.

http://www.menupages.com/

Search by cuisine, district and price and then read the reviews. Good site.

I'm going there on Friday. I live in AZ, which is why the first reservation on the weekend meal list is Utsav; very nice Indian - something I can't get where I am right now.

Annoyed to find you can't get a proper doner kebab in NYC, though.

Ignore Paddy & Murphy, he's just a weird stalker.

The stalker does have a point, though Peter Luger in the meat packing district is the place for steaks. They have a dry-ageing house on site, and they really know what they are doing. Phenomenal. Reservations usually several weeks in advance (from experience). That said, it isn't hard to find good steaks in NYC.

Depending on what you're after, go to any of the recommended spots for genuine Buffalo wings, with it being the State speciality and all. Great lunch, 20 hot with some shoestring fries and a jug of piss-water lite.

Last time I was there they didn't even bother taking an order. They just brought you food.

I have eaten there, and was a touch underwhelmed. Granted, I was a little sick when I went, but still, found it hard to get excited about the food. Service was excellent.

Now, we're going higher budget here, but in the same Iron Chef light - Morimoto. It is very expensive, but it is utterly, utterly astonishing.

I went quite a few years ago, so maybe (like a lot of restaurants) its declined a bit since then.

Talking of underwhelming...I went to "Felidia" to on the back of a great review in the Michelin guide. Jesus, it was poor. They'd basically overbooked the restaurant so we had to wait 90 mins for a table and then wait and wait and wait as the kitchen was completely overwhelmed by the numbers. Shame as I'd built it up in my head that it was going to be brilliant and felt really let down by the whole experience...

Funnnily enough I have just been booking a restaurant in NY for tonight (morrimotto). I use www.menupages.com for reviews as it is a great resource and always book through www.opentable.com. There is an Iphone app or it can be accessed via blackberry while out doing what ever you do in NYC.

I will be drinking in Pastis tonight as mentioned by someone earlier but I dont eat there as it is too noisey. However their sister restaurant http://www.balthazarny.com/ is a better bet and it is in soho. Others will say it is too touristy but I don't think it's that bad.

If anyone is looking for a decent meal in meat packing go to highline http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/41304264/new...

This is under the highline park (which is great/bizzare if you are in the area) and a meal will be closer to $50 per head instead of $100-$200 for the other places near by.

for Doners, this place might work:

Mangal Turkish in Queens. The lamb is juicy, a bit fatty (in a good way for me) and very flavorful. It's not like the usual processed lamb on a spit. They'll serve it to you on pide but make sure you ask for it (they call it "homemade bread"; $1 extra but worth it), otherwise you'll get a sorry pita that will fall apart on first bite. They put on a thick hot sauce and a decent white sauce, and possibly a little tahini. It might be the best doner in NYC. Everything else I've tried there has been consistently good. It's very informal, a bit cramped and the TV's always on the Turkish channel. It might be what you're looking for.

Mrs Dibble very kindly took me to NYC for my 40th.

My two favourite places were Gallagher's Steak House and the Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station.

Gallagher's has fantastic, 60 year old, grumpy New York waiters. I like my food, but even I struggled with the portion sizes here. There's a well stocked bar, too...

The Oyster Bar was very good too. There are several bottles of wine topping out in the several thousand dollar range, but there's also plenty of reasonably priced stuff too. The seafood is, as you'd expect, fantastic.
