Finally got mine and used it in anger. I got mine from Wickes and went for the 1600C rather than the 1450C max one. Price difference £28 rather than £8. Oh well. Got a cheap piece of steak to test it out on, rather thin sadly, but will be a worse case scenario.
Here it is:-

very easy to use, self lighting and twist the knob. Did each side of the steak

As you can see a nice browning but the actual steak is not warming up below which is what we want for black and blue

Above is the smokey pan to finish off

Right, so not black and blue, more medium rare. Considering the thinness of the steak quite pleased. The best bit was that the outside was cooked so much that it took on the mineral taste as per New York steak houses.
All in all for a first attempt a very good showing. With a thicker piece of meat and the Alain Ducasse method afterwards I think this would be the perfect steak. At least for me.
More experiments to come.

I just invested in a 1850 degree blowtorch, cast iron Le Cruset griddle pan, and some rib eye from a proper butchers to do a fancy meal for the missus tomorrow night. The overall costs are more than taking her out for a fancy meal, but a chunk of it will be re-usable.
Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll have a crack at the full on Heston Blumenthal 24 hour steak...
