As the title, really.
Should whisky be put in a decanter?
Does it lose aroma, or flavour?

In my view there is no particular reason to decant whisky. Its neutral in the bottle and basically does not change, unlike wine. Does no harm either , though if you re keeping it for months I would tend to avoid lead crystal.

Only if it's a very cheap one like the supermarket value or basic range and you don't want any visitors knowing wink
...or somehow you've managed to break the bottle.

Thanks.
I was at the Whisky Live 2010 event this weekend where they were sellng glasses, decanters, etc.
I presume they are more for aesthetics?

yes - there is no reason to decant whisky.

a nice nosing glass is good to have on hand if you enjoy whisky tasting - tumblers are a bit large.

I've done it for youthumbup

And yes, it's for aesthetic reasons AFAIK.

Ordinarily I would say no, but if you were a person of some substance, with the friends (and gaff) to match, I can see the appeal of having your man pour generous glasses for your guests from one of several vintage decanters that simply came with the house (along with the staff). Your friends can then pass a knowledgeable yet brief comment on the provenance of the dram.

It does nothing for the whisky and, in fact, the whisky will evaoporate more quickly unless the decanter has a very good seal.

I got one as a wedding present and, while it's very nice, I've only used it because I bust the cork on a bottle of Ardmore.

And, to be honest, if I've got friends round it's more likely we'll be having a selection of drams rather than drinking just one whisky.
