So,

went in slug and lettuce in Bristol for a bite yesterday lunch

Normal menus and normal prices all over, no notices to state anything will be added at till

Had a tab and just paid at the end

Wasnt until I got home I noticed the cheeky bds added 2.5% to every item!

Whats the score on this from a legal point of view?

I'd say that they offered you the meal for £x, by ordering the meal you agreed to purchase it for that price and by supplying the meal they completed the contract. Hence they had no right to add the 2.5%. However, that's just my non-lawyer opinion.

(stupidly) there is no requirement now for food places like that to HAVE to display prices.

however, as they have provided menus it should include all compulsory charges including VAT so you are correct in thinking they hsould not be adding on sly charges on at the end - esp if it is the VAT increase

tell you local trading standards

The real question is did they put out new cheaper menus when the VAT was 15%? As they may be using the VAT at 17.5% menu then adding 2.5%
