I'm off work for a week and thinking of going to France for a day to stock up on cheap booze and fags - does anyone know how much of a saving I'll be making getting them there? I've heard it's not that cheap anymore

Wine is cheaper by a lot, beer is a bit cheaper but fags are pretty much the same price as here. If you want cheap fags you need to go to Belgium instead.

We buy the wine in Calais, ciggies on the ferry. They might only be a pound or so per packet cheaper but, when you're buying 3 months supply for 2 people, that's still quite a saving. Do the Maths, as they say.

Just go to Adinkerke in Belgium for the fags, it's fully geared up for Brits making bulk purchases and is very close to the French border too.

The exchange rate is the kicker.

Years gone by I thought the savings on booze offset the cost of the trip. Now I'm not so sure.

Incidentally, it is possible to grow tobacco in the UK. I have a friend who does it.

The finest cigars are rolled on the thigh of a Cuban lovely. Getting one of those in the UK could be tricky...

Now I'm led to believe that this is a myth, just like the one about all lesbians being stunning twentysomethings with large breasts and in fact the finest cigars are rolled on the thighs of overweight middle aged Cuban spinsters. Having said that I guess finding one of them in rural Oxfordshire is likely to be just as tricky!

I'm sure the reality is that they're made by fat middle-aged hippocrocomooseami in the Cuban equivalent of Doncaster.

However the fact remains that you can grow tobacco in the UK. My friend does it in a greenhouse. Indoors or a sunny balcony might also work.

Buying stubbies of beer is considerably cheaper. My poison is '33' in cases of 24 for just a few quid.

you can buy a crate of 33 in the uk for a few quid too!

best for cigs is the baltic states, £7 for 200. I don't smoke but managed to sneak a case full back which paid for the flight when sold on at work.

If you go to Adinkerke, make sure you take sterling cash for the lowest prices.

I went to the Cohiba factory in Cuba. Unfortunately they're not rolled on the thighs of beautiful Cuban ladies, but the majority of the workers there were women, and they are handmade! Quite impressive watching them make them.
