I'm in Newcastle for the next couple of nights (city centre) and my previous experience has been of a culinary waste land. Can anyone recommend somewhere decent to eat. No Chinese or Indian places thank you.

My experiences (live in Gateshead)...

Marco Polo's on Dean Street is a great Italian restaurant...very reasonably priced, good quality food. expect £25-£30/head including wine.

Rumpoli's, Quayside...italian, average food, average price. nuff said tbh.

The Lounge Rooms - Grey Street. Good food (one of the best steaks i've had) fairly reasonable. quite a loud atmosphere - pianist plays while you eat, and there's a bar joined on to the restaurant. roughly £35-40/head.

Malmaison, Quayside...pretty decent food, but very overpriced and not great service. Sommelier was great though, expect £40-50/head.

Cafe 21 on the Quayside (sorry, can't remember the name of the street). Oustanding french-influenced cuisine with superb service, complemented by a maitre d' who is extremely passionate about his work. Had the best meal of my life there recently, but don't expect an evening meal to be less than £60/head incl. wine...However, I believe they have a daytime/early evening offer of £20/head for 3 courses which seems like a bargain to me!

Other places of interest:

The Cluny - Pub Grub done extremely well (...and a vast array of international beers)

Cafe de Vie - great little french cafe with great coffee and seating outside to watch the world go by.

Black Door Brasserie - meant to be very good, haven't tried it though.

anything specific cuisine-wise, just give me a shout.

black door brasserie is well worth a look, or was a couple of years back at least!
