Now as the party was better then I thought I ended up with some bloming expensive (20 quide per bottle) icewine in my freezer - I just was not in a position to take it out in time banghead
It was some lovely Riesling and interetingly the bottles are not broken and the cork is still in however the wine is completely frozen
Now what to do????

Thaw it out and drink it. I can't imagine it'll have changed much, if at all. If you had inadvertently boiled it that might be different!

You might get away with it. Pop it in the fridge and hope the bottles don't crack as it thaws.

Don't know about wine, but beer(lager) certainly never tastes quite right after being frozen... can't do any harm to try it though.

Lager, for sure, tastes appalling once it has been frozen.

Vodka on the other hand is just fine. Is it to do with the alcohol content? I wonder if wine has a high enough ABV to keep it safe.

OP, give it a go - no harm in trying! Let us know how you get on wink

It will be undrinkable. Tell you what, why don't I pop round and save you the trip to the bottle bank?

Vodka (at least the decent stuff) should be frozen...

How did the icewine get in the freezer? Did someone put it there ? the term icewine comes because it's made from frozen grapes which have their sugars concentrated to make a very good dessert wine. It doesn't mean you stick it in the freezer...I'm sure you knew that wink

I just called it icewine, because of it's fate...
It was actually good quality Riesling which was popped there because it needed rapid cooling to be enjoyed - however the host went- er- somewhat out of order and hence it was left in the fridge - wondered when I woke up this morning why the timer is still beeping...
It is currently slowly thawing in the fridge and then will be tasted b4 it's fate is going to be sealed....

So not really an Eiswein then. Let us know how it tastes...I'm sure it will be OK, just not as good as it should have been. smile

Wine generally deteriorates when the chemicals in it change - usually oxidation (most obviously alcohol to acid). This is a chemical reaction, and the colder it is, the slower reactions go. So I think you'll be OK.

When I've had white wine that has been accidently frozen, it's been fine.

Surely the decent stuff would have a high enough alcohol content not to freeze.

If I remember my fermentation technology notes correctly, freezing precipitates the protein.

Yeh, thats what i meant. The good stuff (or even anything half-decent) will go nice and gloopy in the freezer and taste smoother, cheap stuff can freeze solid.

I've done this before and it tasted fine after being thawed. As long as it's not champagne or sparking wine it should be fine.

Being frozen will not have done it any good but maybe not as much harm as to make it useless!

It may still be drinkable once thawed. At least cook with it rather than throw it away!

Champagne has the neck frozen during "Methode Champinoise" IIRC to allow the removal of yeast...so if the French do it deliberately maybe you'll get away with it!
