i've been car-less for the past 4mths, but picked one up at the weekend and my first trip was something i'm sure every pher would approve of. yep, drove straight to waitrose! 
oh waitrose how i have missed thee!
nearest one is 15ish miles away and isn't on a bus route so i have been deprived. like any addict, i quickly lost my cool when faced with so much temptation and ended up spending a bloody fortune!
todays packed lunch was tapas and crusty bread, dinner is going to be veal,pork & fennel sausage, lamb & apricot sosatie, onion marmelade, dijon mustard and fresh bread
lunch tomorrow will be a goats cheese salad with rasperry vinegar dressing, and I bought 2 reblochon cheeses, Normandy creme freche and some treacle smoked Bacon so I can finally make tartiflette! I also have a leg of lamb for later in the week so I can try the harissa paste MC sent me.
I have also made quite a dent in a bottle of makers mark and eaten a not inconsiderable amount of fresh baked florentines.
yup, gluttony and snobbery are my two sins, but tastiness is my reward. omyomyom!

I'm not a snob by any means, but I'd quite happily drive the 11 miles to Waitrose in Cobham, although many other supermarkets are closer.
I think Waitrose must stock according to the demographics of the area: there being a notable Jewish population within catchment, the Cobham branch has all the East European breads and 'fishy things' I like.

A 70 cl bottle of 20% ABV sour cherry liqueur for £5 is a steal, what can I tell you!

I'm not really a snob, just very weak when faced with food choice (a rarity in these parts) especially if I'm hungry. its also a nice change to have supermarket staff who know what service means.
Also an employer who treats their staff well and thereby keeps the good ones.

yes but I'm firmly in the last century when it comes to shopping for anything other than basic products. plus with things like fruit I'm especially picky. it takes me ages to select which punnet of strawberries I want!Mobile Chicane said:

For me this is why trips to M&S and Waitrose are the occasional treat, not part of the monthly shopping routine. We all enjoy good quality food, new things and the occasional treat, but contrary to popular belief you can get these at other supermarkets too...

For meat, vegetables, quaffing wine, breads and cheeses I shop at Waitrose. I'd love to support the independent butcher / baker / candlestick maker, but there aren't any of these within a ten-mile radius.
However, the 'Wine Cellar' in Lower Ashtead is en route, and even if it wasn't, it's well worth a detour.
fwiw I use all major supermarkets as I don't do a regular shop and will go to a particular one depending on what I want. I go every 1-2 days so have aquired a rather sad knowledge of who stocks what. for instance, tesco sell fresh lemon thyme but not the regular variety :geek:
I don't see much difference in Tesco vs Asda pricing but this may be due to my location. Asda is very much the bottom in terms of quality other than the local biscuits and preserves they stock which are the same as you'd buy at a farmers market. bizarrely, their deli parma ham is also very good.
waitrose is pretty much sainsburys prices but cannot be beaten for hard to find items - reblochon, iberico hams etc. its usually these items (hardly every day ones at that) which push up the cost of your basket. the other chains would clean up if they could match the quality of waitrose ready meals.
they are middle class but all the better for it. i was surprised to find one in 'ull and the mile wide aisles are a much better place to be at 'rush hour'. great place for milf spotting too

Is it the Willerby one?It's great in there, their reduced stuff is sometimes stonkingly cheap! It's a new-ish build, hence the wheelchair friendly aisles
