Historical London Pubs

On August Bank Holiday Sunday a friend and I are planning on going around a few historical London Pubs (Historical = old, or where a significant event took place!)

Does the great PH Massive have any pubs which are a MUST?

The Cheshire Cheese is pretty special.
There is another (tiny) one with all the fancy old mirrors still in place, but I can't remember the name...

Ye Old Mitre between Ely Place and Hatton Garden in Holborn is one of the oldest pubs in London.

The Cittie of Yorke in High Holborn incorporates part of one of the oldest standing timber frame buildings in the country.

ETA- Sorry, it was in Time Out, so we made a special effort. But that meant a cab, and I got a little disoriented. And then drunk.

ETA2- I could well be thinking of The Red Lion, but I can't find a photo of the interior to confirm.

The Dove in Hammersmith, the Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street, and the George Inn near London Bridge are good.

For some strange reason, one of my favourite bars in London is Bradley's Spanish Bar just off Oxford Street at the Tottenham Court road end (Hanway St). From a historical point of view, it feels a bit of a throwback to the 60's, it's tiny, shabby, (the gents really pong) doesn't serve food, but has a proper 45s jukebox with some cool tunes on it. They do sell Spanish lager there (San Miguel, Cruzcampo, etc), no real ale.

I usually go there with an old mate after discovering this place about 20 years ago to sit at the bar and do some serious catching up and reminiscing. As the place is so small, we usually end up having good chats and dancies with the staff and other customers as the night wears on.

Already decided to go to three or four (inc the Freemasons Arms, where The Football Association was formed!)

What about pubs where MAJOR events have taken place??

Talking of historical links then: The French House in Soho, atmospheric small pub with a nice French vibe. De Gaul reputed to have Free French meetings there in WW2. Theres a cool restaurant upstairs which does a great chateaubriand too!

Goldsmiths Tavern in New Cross is where Christopher Marlowe was stabbed in the eye...

If you're sticking to Central London then it might be a little out of the way, but The Spaniards Inn has quite a lot of history as well as being a nice place to have a few beers.

Can get a bit too busy during hot weekends though.

the mayflower in rotherhithe has some interesting history. the food in there is pretty good (if a little pricey) too.
