There was a big debate on Radio 2 this morning about resturants only stocking Halal meat because
"if you wanted Halal it was there, if not, you wouldnt know the difference"

Would anyone hate the thought of eating it if you didnt follow that faith?

Given a fair few people actively seek out things that carry a minimum of animal cruelty, then halal meat may not be high on their ethical agenda.

The fact that the restaurant may be doing this on economic grounds (its cheaper) may make this even less palatable.

Personally, I'm not overly fussed, but I'd prefer it to be clear.

try getting meat that *isn't* Halal in parts of London. Esp SW London. All the fried chicken places ( which thankfully I don't like even when a three sheets to the wind ) are Halal, so IIRC the brands, Subway, McD & KFC.

Not sure I am that happy about it... but what can you do.

All the meat at Wembley and Twickenham is Halal, a lot of the time you will be served it, but you won't be informed in order to make a choice to not eat it. Why religious slaughterhouses are exempt from the requirement to stun animals before cutting their throats I don't know.

Because stunned animals wouldn't hear the recorded blessing/prayer/enchantment being broadcast.

I regularly eat Halal meat, every time I have a curry. If I had a choice before me in a butcher shop I would go with whichever cut looked better.

No. That's what I was getting at, a huge number of people will have eaten it at different places without knowing, because they were not informed.

It's a fair point about having a curry, however you go for one knowing what's what. How many people would assume their burger whilst watching the match was Halal meat?

I imagine that 99% of the people who go for a curry have no idea that the meat they are eating is almost certainly halal. i doubt most of them care either.

IME 99% of non-Muslims don't know what it is or don't care. As a caterer it's getting more and more difficult to buy non-Halal chicken by the day.

I'll eat any Halal meat, especially pork.

I have done, loads of times.

Given the choice though, I'd rather eat meat from an animal that I'd killed myself or that I was reasonably sure had been slaughtered humanely.

I don't feel [I]that[/] strongly about it though, meat tastes too damn good!

wink

So all these places are obviously choosing halal meat not because its halal but because its cheaper and presumably from baroad? or is it from within the UK?

As long as it tastes good. I would however expect to be advised at the point of ordering though, in the same way that Muslims expect their Halal meat to be proper Halal meat.

Where does the idea that halal meat is cheaper come from?

I wonder if free range/organic chicken is allowed to be slaughtered in this way...

Anyway, I don't knowingly eat unstunned Halal, and would not. I'm happy enough to never eat in another curry house if necessary, and the fast food joints never see me anyway.
