I'm starting uni (part time) in Sheffield on Monday. It's my first 2 week stint and rather than sit in my hotel on Sunday evening, I was wondering if anyone good recommend some good ale pubs in the vicinity of the station area.

The sheffield tap - actually in the station, so you can't get much closer than that. Suprisingly for a station pub the beer is excellent. They've a strong showing of Thornbridge beers and lots of others, mmmm, Thornbridge lick

The Fat cat and kelham island tavern - find them and forget the rest!
Google says 20 minutes walk from the station, you wont regret it but will probably want a taxi back!

Enjoy!

I thought you kids were supposed to be tech savvy rolleyessmile

why imagine when it's available - http://itunes.apple.com/app/camra-good-beer-guide-...

Why not join CAMRA and get all the info and upated of info, young people get a discount - http://www.camra.org.uk/page.aspx?o=292666 - gawd knows why they got more money (usually their parents) than us older folk they should be charged more not less, moan, moan, moan, but it's usually right isn't it smile

£14 DD to join and you get £20 of 'Spoons vouchers do "the math" on that - it's "a no-brainer"

The paper copy of the GBG would help you study other areas and topics and you'd know that the Kelham Island Tavern is the CAMRA National pub of the Year for a second year running

(how can you comprehend all this completely from such a small screen)

Look out for these pubs before they disappear - http://www.heritagepubs.org.uk/pubs/national-inven...

Drink sensibly, study hard, learn from books and life experiences, help those less fortunate than yourself, keep your health, measure wealth by more than money

Good luck

Some good beers listed against those pubs - good shout.

There are nearly 30 pubs in the beer guide - Sheffield is split into N-E-S-W & central.

Camra do POI downloads for a fee (Garmin/TomTom), but not a smartphone app.

Happy drink

Pothole me owd mucker, I had to Google Baz Luhrmann (old age memory) and as the Wikki said he was involved in Strictly Ballroom, one of my all time favorite films I take that as a high compliment, I rarely need to to wear sunscreen but would think it it best for others

but yes youth is wasted on the young, you and I both know that now but not when we were young, why didn't we listen

I was taking the pi$$ but hopefully also having a laugh and encouraging, real ale is a fine thing, it almost dissappeared once and could do so in the future, hopefully not in my lifetime - keep that pillow away from me

Also had to Google AICMFP, I think £2.50 in this case

Baz Luhrman...as us "young" ones (read old 23 year old turning 60!) Choooooon!

Having persuaded some others to the Sheffield Tap... £4 a pint for Thornbridges Halycon "2010 Green Hop Limited Edition"

Superb!

What a pub. Just re-inforces the notion that the north does better beer than the south...!!!!

b2dan.... drinking mild & single malts at 23 (theres no hope!)

The joy of real ale is finding fantastic beer but because it's a natural food it varies they are very good and very bad beers and brewers in the north and the south

fizz beers are a dead product so are consistant (in my personal opinion and taste - bland)

if you can find on draught BrewDog 5 am Saint that's a brew that can rival even the best of the mighty (and fantastic) Thornbridge

I had had a few beers when I posted that.

Halcyon Green Hopped IPA...7.7%

Very nice, but not suitable for a session!!

There are some nice southern beers I just prefer my stouts normally which I've found in more abundance up north!
