What i find really annoying,is that you can't buy the single portion sized tins like you can baked beans.Being on my own now every time i've opened a tin and got what i want out of it,i have to throw half of it out. irked

a) Mushy peas are the work of the devil.

b) This thread will shortly be moved to Food & Drink, where it belongs.

They freeze quite nicely.

Alternatively, look for small tins of processed peas, and make your own mushy peas from that.

I agree with this, in fact I made some homemade pea soup yesterday and chucked in half a cup of mushy peas that were in the fridge!!

I failed though when blending the boiled mix as the blender broke and gave my whole kitchen including myself a code green situation frown

Tip

Freeze the peas into balls, once frozen cover them in batter then deep fry. Serve with pie

Nice. I once forgot I'd already opened a bottle of vinaigrette before I gave it a voilent shaking, covering me and half the kitchen in the filthy stuff.

I did that at school with a bottle of mayonnaise. I can still remember looking up and seeing graceful zig-zag arcs of mayonnaise sailing upwards - and then descending...

Mushy peas eh - well, i prefer garden peas.

But if a can is opened, it's true that one can't eat it all by himself in one go...well, some could but that's not the point.

Not keen on freezing it - would eat it within 2-3 days anyway.
Decanter leftover peas into small bowl/plastic container, cover it up and in the fridge it goes.

What's wrong with just buying a 1kg bag of frozen mushy peas and using what you need each time?

You can make your own from dried marrowfat peas;

Put the peas in a large bowl and sprinkle with the sodium bicarbonate. Pour warm water over the peas, enough to cover them by 6cm to allow for swelling. Stir and leave overnight.

Drain the peas and put in a large saucepan. Pour in sufficient water to cover. Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 20–25 minutes. The peas should break down and ‘fall’ into the liquid. Add a little more water if you like them very mushy. Season to taste at the end of cooking.

Sainsbury's do small-ish cans, they look about half a baked bean tin size.

There lies a problem, I am simply not organised enough or can be arsed with that sort of thing.

Can't the OP just call via a chippy on the way home and pick up a portion, what are they - 60p??

On another note, has anyone on this thread ever lived in Nottingham and been to the stall in the Vicki Centre fish market for a few cockles and whelks and a portion of mushy peas from the massive vat they have in there??

One of the few things I miss about the place.

you could always get a larger tin and make this with the remainder of the peas

Avocado and Green Pea Hummus(Kermit Poo)

1 ripe avocado
2 x 15ml lime juice
1/2 clove of garlic
1 teaspoon of maldon salt/i/2 teaspoon of table salt
1 x 300g Marrow Fat Mushy Peas
About 8 pumpernickle slices

spoon out the flesh of the avocado into a processor, add the lime juice and crushed garlic, add the salt and drained peas and puree into kermit poo, spread onto little pumpernickel squares.
if you want to use it as a dip add a couple of teaspoons of philadelphia cream cheese when you puree the mix, serve with corn chips or crudites

I'm pretty sure you can get half size tins of Farrow's Marrowfat Peas from most supermarkets. They are without doubt the best home replacement in lieu of chip shop mushy peas. Finding mushy peas in Scotland's chippies can be quite a struggle.
