I would have thought any of the hotels would be a safe bet? Although the hotel isn't 5star the restaurant at the city inn on temple way always gets good reviews and don't think it's too costly either.

If you don't mind stretching the 'or around' part a bit and your wallet a fair but I would instantly say the manor house at Castle Combe, providing they are not just doing guests this year. The Bath Priory is another strong contender, as is the Bath Spa Hotel.

Failing that, if you want to stay in Bristol I imagine the surroundings of Hotel du Vin would be suitable for Christmas. Only ever had 'event' catering there but it has always been rather pleasant.

Oh dear. I hope it's not a sad story that's led to this.

Are you sure you want to go out? If so, be prepared to have your wallet raped.

Even if you really can't cook, M&S do various stuffed turkey breast things to sling in the oven plus veggies in the microwave.

Follow the instructions and you can't go wrong.

Hotels are hugely expensive to go to for Christmas lunch

I noticed my favourite curryhouse in my hometown (not Brizzle, sorry) is having a huge banquet buffet with entertainment for £25/head on Christmas Day

Alternatively, how about somewhere (and I'm ready to duck the tank of the (food) snobs on PH) like a Toby Carvery? They're pretty good value.

That said, Mobile Chicane's answer was a good 'un. M&S is EASY stuff and very good. That way you can have a glass or 3 of bubbly and not worry about D&D.

Bon appetit! lick

If your son is old enough to wield a knie try whittling the carrots into shapes. In the end it doesn't matter what it tastes like when you have a bit of father - son bonding.

Xmas is about dry turkey, overccoked veg, roast potato and a bit of pudding with custard. TBH you can't go too wrong with M&S or a simple cook book.

If you do want to go down the cook at home route, just let m&s take the strain. Buy everything already in baking trays- no washing up!

Here's the answer!

"Makers of a new Christmas dinner-flavoured Pot Noodle say it's a "festive fusion of turkey and stuffing with all the trimmings" -- which we think is putting an impressively positive spin on a rather depressing way to spend your Christmas day.

The Pot Noeldle (yes, that's really what they've called it) comes packaged in a festive red and gold pot, decorated with a Christmas tree, crackers and a tear-off bauble lid.

It's claimed to contain all the festive tastes associated with a proper Christmas dinner including turkey, stuffing and trimmings like parsnips and gravy, and was developed after work with the RAF Regiment.

While it's sure to go down a storm with students -- who must account for the majority of the 240 Pot Noodles which are said to be eaten in the UK each minute -- we personally think we'll give it a miss.

However, before we get too down on the freeze-dried dinner, it's worth noting the festively packaged noodles are being sold to raise money for British troops abroad to call home.

Two pence from each £1.10 sale will go to the RAF's Miles More Minutes project which gives troops extra time to call loved ones at Christmas."

As said earlier, I hope it's not a gloomy reason for there being just the two of you.

I'd avoid the hotels. You could get a lovely meal, but xmas is about atmosphere (and the lord jesus christ our saviour etc of course if you're that way inclined) but hotels don't have much of that. If you have a good small family run Italian restaurant near you, that'll likley get rowdy and fun! Kids like NOISE! Hope you have fun!
